FEW DOLLARS STILL LACKING IN "YM." DRIVE Over $1000 in Pledges and Money Turned in-Some to Report Late MOST SUCCESSFUL YET Hall, Stevens and Swink Win Prize* For Highest Points in Drive Only a few more dollars are lacking before reaching the goal that was set out for at the beginning of the "Y" financial campaign last week. This has been the most successful campaign that the Y. has ever had, due to the loy al work of the men who were on the committees to see the men of the cam pus. So far over $1,000 in pledges and money has been turned in. Some men on the campus were not in their rooms when the canvass was made and the finance committe hopes to see them this week so that the total asked for by the Y. may be realized. "Red" Hall of Tenement 17, brought in the largest amount of pledges and Stevens, of Tenement 7 brought in the largest amount of cash. They, together with Marion Swink, whose division brought in the largest amount of pledges will be given prizes that were offered by Kinard, Marshall-Tatum, and Copeland. These merchaAits are interested in thi work of the Y. and kindly offer-i n give these prizes to show their interest. Some few of the canvassers have not made a complete report to date. Mr. Scott, the treasurer of the Y. says that he is sure that when the full returns arc in, the Y. will havethe money that will insure a real Rrogram for this year. - U.S.C. - Y-W.C.A. CHANGES PLACE OF VESPERS Programs for Future Meetings Tentatively Arranged-Ten Commandments Discussed Vesper Services of the Y.W.C.A. have changed the place of meetings from the Chapel to Flinn Hall. Though the lasi meeting was well attended, some of the girls did not know of the change. Programs for the future meetings have been tenatively settled. The "Ter Commandments" was suggested, and, will be taken up at the different meet ings. Wednesay night the first com -mandment, "thou shalt have no other God before me", was disoussed. Miss Creighton, Y.W. secretary lead the ser vices for the evening. The musical part of the evening was under the direction of Miss Lillie Baker. Agnes Carson and Elizabeth Phillips gave a violin duet. - u.s.c. - VESPER CONTINUED DESPITE CONFLICTV It was decided at the Y.WV. Cabinet meeting Monday at 2 o/clock to have Y.W.C.A. Vesper this Wednesday, and next, in spite of the handicaps of foot ball games. pep meetings, an~d the Orangeburg game. TAYLOR SPEAKS AT CHAPEL EXERCISES Rev. Lewis Taylor, pastor of th< Church of Good Shepherd spoke at th< chapel exercises Tuesday morning. He based the central theme of his talk upa the illustration of Newtorfs law. "You and I get back from this if, exactly what we put iun. a. said th< speaker. FINANCIAL CAMPAIGN BEGINS Inaugurate Plan Used by the Y.MC.A,-That of Being Self-Supporting Money was the main tdpjc for discus sion at the "Y.W." cabinet meeting at Melton Hall Monday afternoon. Plans for canvassing the campus and town were made, and different girls were is signed to head committees. Here-to-fore, the money for the "Y. W." has been subscribed by members of the faculty and donations by outsiders. This year. with a large number of co-eds on the campus, the cabinet decided to designate one week as "Fivancial Cam paign Week" and start raising sub scriptions from the girls in the same mannep.that the "Y.M." does. Miss Lanchaster was put in charge of the Wednesday night Vesper services and Miss Elizabeth Lindsay was ap. pointed to see about the special music. -u.s.c. - RECEPTION AT "C. C." DRAWS LARGE CROWD STREET CARS CROWDED 200 Attend-Faculty and Girls in Receiving Line, 10 o'clock Comes too Soon Poor motorman, his life was a misety on the 7:45 car !ast Friday evening I To begin with, the College Place car was filled to overflowing with Carolina men going out to C. C. to the annual re ception given by the Y.W.C.A. of that college. The little buzzers were kept going constantly and a member of the hand began to play a rag time tune on the bell in the back. Arriving at the college, the men, 200 strong, were ushered in and went thru a receiving line of the faculty and a number of the girl. It was only a few minutes until all were paired off and started strolling around or found cozy Dlaces in the many parlors or "retreats." The Columbia College orchestra play ed for over an hour and then "Rat" Hoi lis took up the burden and had large crowds around the piano for the re mainder of the evening. Some harbored vague hopes that the big clock in the reception room would fail to buzz at the stroke of ten, but no such luck. The 10:30 car brought hack to town a quieter but happier group. - U.S.C. - FROSH "Y" COUNCIL HOLDS FIRST MEETING Some Twenty Men Already Se. lected-Learn Rudiments of "Y" Work A Freshman Training council is be ing organized this week by the "Y" and the first meeting was held last night in Flinn Hall. Thru the Fresbargaan Friend ship Council of which Bill Boyd is chair man, men are being picked so that they may be trained for the work of the Y. M.C.A. after they are upper classmen. At this first meeting no business was transacted, the object being for the men to get acquaintedl of them i the work. At the next meeting officers will be elected. Some 20 men have already been selectedl for the council, and about 20 more wvill be selected in the course of the next few weeks. The Y.,is looking for men who are interested in the kind of work whlich the organization does on the campts and who have ability and qualities of leadership. Men who are :?terestedl are asked to see Bill B~oy',, or R. G. Bell at Flinni Hall. The Freshman council has been in operation at the University for the past four years.
