TWO CAR( GAME TO HAVI BEARING ON RANK IN S.] Fetzer Brothers Are Reported As Having Excellent Tarheel Aggregation VETERANS PLAY IN LINE Much Interest Being Shown in Con test to Judge From Early Ticket Sales Here A week of strenuous practice lies be hind the Gamecocks football squad as they rest tonight ready to meet the elev en brought from Chapel Hill by the well known coaches of the U-iiversity of North Carolina, Bob an! 3ill Fetzer. What branch Bocock has been doing in the way of preparing to meet the Tar portance, is making it a coveted contest main a mystery to the public for no one has been admitted to any of the practi ces this week. It is evident, though, that coach will have a few tricks tip his sleeve to match the shifty doings of his two rival coaches. The game, from the standpoint of im portance, in making it a coveted contest for the fighting birds. It will play an important part in determining South Carolina's rank among the teams of the Southern Intercollegiate conference be ing the first conference game the Birds will engage in this fall and, perhaps, the hardest to win. Recently the Gamecock has risen as an BILL FETZGER, N.C. Coach equal of the Tarheels in the football world, a p)lace which, for a long time before, he had iiot been able to a'pproach. Although North C-Arolina has rarely de feated Carolinia b)y a one-sided score, if ever, it wvas not until last year the South was not until last year that the South state registered a wvin over the North. Trhen the margin was a scant three points mad(e hy a field goal kicked by Boatwright, lhe of the talentedi toe. Trhe North Caroliaians were last week beaten by the tantalizing majority of one touchdown at the hands of their keenest rivals in the state. Wake Forest. If the intimations ini prdss dispatches can be us ed for judlging the feelings of the stud ents and players of the University up there it is plaiin that they are out for the scalp and blood of someone else to give them revenge in a way for I>eing hum bled by the Deacons. So they come in a back-to-the-wall spirit to give battle to the Gamecock. Ccach Bocock and his staff of coaches are reticent upon the subject of any pro bable outcomes of the conflict and are busily preaching work and knowledge, content to let the results of the game care for itself. Hard practices were held throughout the week with stiff scrimmages with the freshmen on Tlue'. (Continueto pnage seven )LINAS W1 IMPORTANT GAMECOCK'S . The score was a little larger than the average, being 33-0. The conflict was almost devoid of any ii tense interest and the patient customers (ad to get their synthetic pep out oi watching the clever work of the Game cock line and backfield and the brilliant work of one of the 'players, Bob Wim )erly, whose work stood out in the last part or-the game when he was sent in as a substitute. Wimberly first stepped into the cal cium glare when he waltzed through the whole psalm-singing team for 50 yards andl a touchdown after receiving a punt. He continued to bring them back in spectacular fashion, although the boun dary lie usually kept him from making any more touchdowns on long runs. He is being prominently mentioned for all American on the campus. Tlhe whole Carolina team played in a mannier gratifying to the coaches, in view of the fact that it has been greatly hindered in its early season practice by unuual heat. When once the team be gan working together, in the last part of the second quarter, the score mounted rapidly, until in the last quarter the scrub) linesmen had their fling. Caro lina's defense was impregnable and less ground was gained through the for wardls than wvas lost ini the attempt to pienet rate themi. The Carolina back field executed lB cocks "Hip" shift precisely and showed the results of much drill ini the effective way they worked it. The Gamecock backfield proved to lbe light but fast and fill of drive. Erskine suffered from a lack of sub stitutes, at the close of the game beeing almost fagged out, but they shlowedl a *true blue fighting spirit. Pratt, clever halfback, was in every play on the dhe fense and showed versatility in other lines, especially the eA,ol manner in (Continuedt age- seven [LL CLASH The Gridiron Inkpol The Seceder clan displayed plucky fighting spirit in the opener last Sat urday afternoon, but the Birds were the stronger and found victory com paratively easy. The score of 33 to 0 wasn't bad, eh! And say, Gang, did you see Mr. Wimberly trot over the chalk lines with that pigskin. The more we think of his fast running in the game, the faster it seems he ran. And Pratt of the Erskine eleven was a star. Pratt play a strong defensive game, and he surely could punt. At times lie was almost completely sur rounded by the Birds, but he always got off the kick. Keel) up the good work Gamecocks and let's bring the state football cham pionship to Carolina. Remember, each student is expected to be in the cheering section tomorrow when the South Staters battle the North Staters. The Gamecocks will take on the Uni versity of North Carolina eleven at3:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Univer sity field. The ainual battle is slated to he a thriller. The North Staters will come withithe intentions of avenging the defeat ad ministered to them last year by the Gamecocks, the score being 10-7. But the Birds have determined to thwart the plans of the visitoors, and 'tar' and feathers will fly before the game ends. The North Staters met defeat last Saturday at the hands of Wake Forest, the score being 6---but that does iot mean that the Birds will find 'en "chicken feed". Instead it gives the Tar heels new vigor to win. The Garnet and BlaQk eleven is ex pecting no set-up from the North Caro lina opponents. The players have trained hard this week to be in coidition for one of the biggest games of the season. Supporters of both the Carolina ma .chines have been slow in offering dope as to the oiqtcome of the melee. Regard less of the results when the game is over the visitors are sure to realize they have been in a terrific struggle. That a real match is assured is found in the fact that the Birds and North Staters both boast of elevens composed of fully 50 or more per cent, of veteran material.
