FRESHMAN He Couldn't J BUT WHY DO WE ( He's I (By the Li, Last Tuesday I was standing down at the Union Station talking to a Caro lina man. We had been selected to help greet the incoming Frosh and assist themi in getting located and settled. We had ijust met a train and sent a batch vp to the "Y". Not seeing any other Fresh Meat to extend the glad and hearty hand to we retired to the waiting room and were discussing more or less heatedly the fundamental elements that comprise an asl around Frail. The argument was reaching a speforific stage when I felt a touch on my arm. I turned around quickly with an ingratiating smile ex pecting to see a limb of the law come to decide the issue. There in all his innocence stood this Frosh that I am going Itd tell you about. Glorious Apollo The first thing that struck me was his size. He seemed to Sulgc out all over. His gangling legs and arms sttck out oi his clothes like enlongated tooth picks. His sandy thatch of hair refused to be hidden by the suspicion of a hat that he wore. I stared at him until I became aware of his grin. From ear to ear it stretched. It was irrisistible. My Buddy murmured, "Gaze on it people, eats, sleeps, walks and talks-the only one of its kind in captivity." We decided that this problem deserved a little personal attention. After due consideration we decided to toss a coin to decide who should assume the respon sibility. As I never was lucky I piled Wearing of Freshman Caps Emblematic of True Spirit HONOR'- NOT SUBMISSION Freshmen Should Wear Them With Pleasure - Caps Late This Year The wearing of garnet and black caps by all first-year iei is an old custom at the University. It was be gun years ago, the writer dosen't know just when, and since that vague date all freshmen have been known by the headgear that they wore. Some of the freshies of other years have en joyed wearing them and others have found it the best policy; it is really an shonor to he a wearer of the garnet and black, and it is also an indication of true college spirit anid loyalty. Since the year of its institution the custom has remainedl the same, but it may be said of the cap itself that it has gone through a process of evolu tion. The original cap was a very small, tight-fitting one, a cap that stuck closely to the head, and one which had a lonig bill jutting out in front in very much the same way that a woodpecker's bill p)rotrudes out into space. It was tru:ly ridiculous, or bet ter,it made tihe ones who wore it ap pear ridiculous, queer, and funny. This skull cap wa's put aside a few :years a -go anid a more st.ylish cap, a neater, fuller cap took its p)lace. Trhen just last year this cap gave away to the popular Varsity style cap, the One which will be worn this season. No freshman can complain of the cap now being worn; it is necat, stylish, and u to date in every way. It is too badthat our camptus rep resentatives,. who by the wvay, is sotue agent for freshman caps, has not vet recieved his order. Thec cap company with which lie placed his order had the misfortune to lose its factory by fire, and on account of this has beer unable to fill its orders on time. B3ut this is not such a serious delay sincet a good supply is comeing soon. Fresh men, place your orders now. - u.s.c. - "I am the cats!" said the mouse when FE4TURE NL Velp It ALL THEM GREEN? rade That Way er Doctor) Frosh and baggage in the Boll Weevil and we rolled along up to the "Y," where I got his room assignment. On the way to his room he confided to me that he wanted to take one of these blamed shower baths that he had heard so much about. I showed him where the shower was.located and promised to come back and get him in time for sup per. Bath Tickets Wanted When I came back for him I found him in the bath room with every shower running. He was- sitting on the floor looking sort of disgusted as if it were not up to his expectations. I asked him why he wasn't ready to go to supper, and ie said he had been unable to take a bath because the water wouldn't get deep enough. After he had been iniated into the mysteries of the shower bath I took him to the Mess Hall where I left him to get his supper. I didb't see my Frosh again for a few days. In the meantime I heard that lie had asked Dr. Melton if he were run ning a drug store- and working at the University too; and if ie was he wanted to get a box of Blue Jay's to send home to Paw. His room-mate also confided in me tlhat Zeb, as his name turned out to be, had said that the lamps in his room were the first he had ever seen that he couldn't blow out. I was con siderably worried over this Frosh for a time, but, I finally decided that anyone with Iris infectious grin would be able to make the grade at Carolina. "Say, Mister, can you tell me when I canr finrd Mr. Hope," was the question asked by a large Freshman in froirt of DeSaussure Wednesday. "Why you've been standing here talk ing to him for five minutes," was the reply. "Hd's the big fat fellow." That and many other similar incidents might cause the old men to laugh, but all the meni seem to look forward to the first game when they can show; their school spirit. "Why did you come here to school ?" a small 'slack headed "Rat" was asked. *Well, I just wanted to be different from the other fellows around home. They knocked us, and practically all went to Clemson. I wanted to be differ enet. so I came here.". BROCK HAS FIRST FROSH CA0 What oh ! what was that familiar look ing thing approaching ye scribe from across the campus? A second look, and ah, yes, A RAT CAP! The first of the season it was, and the honor of it foes to "Rat" Daniel Duncan Brock of Un ion, as he stated his full name to the Gamecock scribe. A good beginning is this for the first official day of school, and Brock has shown the true CARO LINA SPIRIT by getting his cap so early. Let us hope that more may be seen in the uiear future for these caps are emblematic of college spirit and not a forced humiliation. Get those caps, Freshmen. - U.s.c. - FRESHMAN HANDBOOK SHOWS IMPROVEMENT Each year the Handbook for Fresh men published by the University Y. M. C.A. has shown marked improvement, and especially notable is the improve ment shown in this year's "Bible." The editors have shown that they did not fear work, and in every way added a finer touch. The cover is very at tractive, and the idea of a Iivision into several parts is an improvei. ent in it self. The descriptions of th, differ ent campus activities are much better in form and the advice given to VPresh men is worthy of mention. The book should serve a good purpose in creat.. ing an impression on the newly ar rived Rats, and the staff may be comn plimented on the improvement made. i Trouble D SCHOOL SPIRIT wightening Out 1L. Just then two large suit cases were seen coming up to the Y with a Fresh man holding on to them. "And why did you come to Carolina ?" he was asked. "Why, because it is the best school in the State."
