THE STATE'S COMMENT ON SATURDAY'S GAME Monday's "State carried the following article which meets with the hearty approval of the Gamecok's staff. For those who did not see it we advise a careful reading to catch the real Car olina spirit. Carolina's start was its ',best since the World war. Incidently Saturday's score was the largest run-up by the scrubs desireed games. There is a fine The Carolina victory was due but the score was larger than the dope. Many favorable comments were heard yesterday on the work of the Carolina backs, for regardless of Erskine*s abil ity, they demonstrated several virtues that can be tested, whether the oppo aent be strong or weak. For instance, the forward pass with the ball stick as the proverbial greased pig, he can do it on a dry day. Likewise with the re ceiver. Also the punting. Also the va riety of attack. Carolina displayed a wider selection of plays than present ed on Thanksgiving day last year. Next the Gamecock meets Georgia at Athens. This will be a real test of strength, for without question, the Bul dog is good this year. Carolina can play with the knowledge that the whole state wishes it well. Carolina has played Georgia spas modically for years. It's off again, on again, with the schedule. The game Saturday is the first between the two schools since 1921, when, because of a timekeeper's error, the two teams played an extra quarte.r Carolina is a state university and its logical op ponents aside from -co(leges in Ahis state are Georgia, North Carolina and Virgiglia. The first should be kept The second has been a foe for years and the games should be continueld. The last named-Virginia-used to be on the schedule but recently has not been. It should be added and Carolina should play the three until it wins if it takes a hundred years. A good time to start beating Geor gia is now and certainly in no way could the Gamecock better show its strength. A Plunger Tlom Brice, fullback, who dlemon strated his ability to hit the line hard and often last week. Look out Crack ersl .OR 7 OF ALL SORTS S. W. Eichel, Editor LOOKING BACK A WEEK IN FOOTBALL South Carolina Teams Open In Good Form - Major Teams Play Out of State This Week (By Jay Em Bee) They're off-the eight varsity foot ball squads of the colleges in South Carolina. However, in speaking of the start of the 1924 gridiron season the old adage has to be amended by striking out the words "in a cloud of dust" for he who is brazen and bold enough to say that the teams were "off in a cloud of dust" last Saturday would even be denied admission into the ranks of the Ananias club. The other members would object on the ground that they could not frame any statement as far from the truth as that would be. But "they're off" and despite the mud dy start and the slippery ball and the "wetness" under foot the Palmetto state teams seem to be out for another sea son of real football. The fans braved the bad weather in goodly numbers to cheer their favorites on. With rain falling right here in Columbia, some 1,500 of the Loyal and Rabid Order of Football! Followers gathered in the stands on University field to see the Gamecock pry off the lid. Starting at home there is encourage ment offered to any who might have been skeptical. The old bird pried off the lid, stepped out of the box into a literal sea of mud and when the after noon was over and the evening had come the University of South Carolina, showing just about the best form it has in an opening game 'n a good many years, had scored at 47 to 0 victory over Erskine. Speaking of Erskine, the Seceders fought gamely and never gave up. With an overwhelming score against them they did some of their best work to ward the end of the game, but their efforts to cross the Gamecock's line were unavailing. They were just out fought and outplayed. The Due West fellows have a rather light schedule, and several open dates, but they will come in contact with some of the best and they are apt to give some trouble. BIRDS LOOK GOOD. The Gamecocks pleased the fans and seem to be headed on one of the best seasons in a long time 'twixt now and Turkey day. The Clemson T1iger roared loudly and long in his opening battle wvith Elon college of North Carolina. The count wvas 60 to 0 with the Jungaleer hold ing the 60 points.. . And yet the press5 accounts have it that the game wvas p)layedl under very dif ficult circumstan ces for Clemson was, not unlike the rest of the state and the Carolinas, without rain, andl there are red hills in that sec tion of the state, too. So the Tiger looks ferocious to say the least. Up to the land of the sky wvent the Presbyterian Blue Stockings. T1hey met a sister Presbyterian college, Dav idson, from old Trarheelia. Davidson won the argument in raiun and mud to the tunle of 15 to 3.. However, South Carolina football followers know Wal ter Johnson too wvell to get dishearten ed over the results of this clash. The Presbyterian from a pClinitoni way had better not be counted out of the run ning before another game or twvo is played. Furman and Newberry p)ut up a close ly contested battle on Manly field in Greenville. The press accounts state that the H-urricanie met strong resis tanice from the Indians and their dan gerous looking tomahawks and the fi nal score wvas 14 to 0 in favor of the Laval (crew.4 Newvberry appears to have one of the best and strongest teams it has put out in several seasons and it seems to be a general consen s'us of opinion that . dlespite the loss of valuable players 'Furman is sqill to be considered one of the formida ble South Carolina aggregations. Wof ford played its second game of GAMES ARE SECURED FOR CAROLINA SCRUBS It is no fun to be bruised, run over maltreated, banged, kicked, and cussed, and then never get anything. So it usually is with the scrub teams. But this year, it is going to be different for those who are fighting their way up to a Garnet and Black jersey. Coach Stoney has decided to put out a real team-a winning team. Donnie Boylston was selected manager and has already secured two games. The first is with the Clemson scrubs Fair week, the day after the annual classic. The second is with Chester, Armistice Day. Manager Boylston is busy filling in the schedule and by the end of the week expects to have it filled. He says lie will get a game at Rock Hill "Winthrop" home town" or resign. At present he is trying to arrange a game with the Erskine Varsity. All this means the fulfilling of the scrubs desired games. There is a fine aggregation out, yet there are places to be filled. Every man should go out if he has the time. He has a chance to make this team, and then the Varsity next year. the season meeting and conquering Piedmont College from DeForest, Ga., by a score of 12 to 0 at Spartanburg. The Terriers gave the fans a good deal to feel encoraged over and when they are able to play on a fairly decent grid iron and under more suitable weather conditions the Wof ford fellows will give a better demonstration of their prowess and ability. The Citadel, without the aid of Ted (ly Weeks, who was not injected into the battle, also conquered an invading foe from another state. Southern Col lege from Florida traveled to the fa mous old South Carolina city but the Floridians could not carry a victory I)ack with them, since they failed to score and the Bull Dog registered two touchdowns, or 12 points. The Citadel looks good this year even without Weeks and if this quarterback gets back into action, as it is probable that lie will in part of the games somebody had bet ter prepare for something. Steppin' Out Bill Jeffords, whose return of a punt 80 yards for touchdown was one of the features of Saturday's game. He can also pass and kick. It looks as if Kid McCoy is due for the biggest knockout of his life After a bird has been married nine time and kills the tent6-one he is after, it is high fime to put an end to his career.
