After twenty-eight years of faithful service as teacher and president, he re tired in 1908 to take up private life near Biltmore, N. C. At this time lie was seventy-two years old and had been placed on the Carnegie foundation some time before. We believe that it would be well nigh impossible to pay a greater tribute to this grand old man than that in last Wednesday's State. as follows: "It is not given to many to enjoy the high esteem that Major Sloan enjoyed, and the news of his death. received in Columbia yesterday, brought sorrow to men and women in every walk of life." Green Speaks at Clariosophic Meeting At the regular meeting of the Clari 4 osophic Society Friday night Dr. E. L. Green was the speaker of the evening. Dr. Green is the author of "A History of the University of South Carolina." Con sequently he was asked to speak on the lives of the early members of the society. The talk was devoted to telling of the lives and deeds of South Caro linians who have made a name for them selves, chiefly Clariosophic Society mem bers, the pictures of whom now adorn CA the .society walls: George McDuffie, Hugh S. Iegare, Thomas Cooper. John C. Calhoun, James L. Petigru and Wade Hampton. In a very pleasing and interesting man ner the life of each was briefly sketched and illustrated with amusing anecdotes. ; In the course of his talk Dr. Green spoke of the early politics and glories of the University. He also told of how the University controlled the politics of the state and South. After the talk the regular program was carried out, followed by many miscellane ous matters. Student Body Endorses Relief Proposition The student body of the University re cently went on record as approving of the campaign for the relief of Russian students. Committees have been ap pointed by the president of the student body to canvass the tenements and to see the town students and the co-eds. This action on the part of the students followed an inspiring talk in chapel re cently by Mr. Hurlburt, representative oi the Russian Student Relief Commis sion. Mr. Hurlburt made an inspiring address in which he depicted graphically the conditions as they exist today in Russia. It is to be hoped that the stu dents will respond liberally to this worthy cause.
