As the (lays pass and Turkey Day draws nearer the loyal supporters of tite Gaiecocks begin to think more and more of the time when the Birds will clash with -the Praying Colonels of Centre. At the same time they go over in their minds the Carolina sea son which at present lacks only that one great ganie of being finished, and I suppose there are many question marks floating about as to the result of the Carolina-Centre contest. The Gamecocks as inl the past season Jid not get away to quit. the flying start that .sonie of the fais might have wished, bit nevertheles- Ithcy got away all right. In the ope .inp game with the Seceders, who were ..anus the ser vices of that gicatest of All-State backs, Dode Phillips, the Birds ac (Ittired two touchdowns while the team penetrated the Gamecock defense, and consequently rang up a zero by their name. The Carolina lie was up to its old standard bit the backfield seemed to lack the necessarv drive. On the following Saturday the Blue Stockings of P. C. caie down from Clinton determined to avenge their 48 to 0 defea-t of last year; they went away with their deterntination a hit shaken, bit with tlhe satisfaction of knowing that they had put utp one grand little scrap, and .that tle heavier Garnet and Black eleven had only crossed their goal line once. In this game also the line was impregnable but the drive of the backs was lacking. Gancock stock hovered around par. Theni tte 1irds m11ade their first trip (if the season to foreigit soil, jourl-my ing to Chapel Hill, N. C.. ,to play the Uiii%-ersity of North Carolina in their own back yard. Here a costly fumble allowed the Tarheels to ring up a touchdown and a field goal in the first period, after tha.t lte North Staters never had a chance to count again. lit the meantime one "Rock" Snipes saved tht Gamecocks from a goose egg, by breaking through the center of the Tar heel liinc and dashing off 67 yards for a touchdown. According tto North Cartilina. the Birds had a defeitse that was as gotiol if not better than Vale. and N. C. knew for they had encouit cred Vale the previous week. Coming back to the Capital City the Gamecocks met the Wofford Terriers -tle following Saturday and routed them by the score oif 21 to 0. For tlte 1irst tinte the backs uicorked a drive that would not he stopped, and the Ter riers could not puncture the living wall of Garnet and Black. Carolina stock took a rise after 'this affair and has remained above par ever since. Now comes the Fair week classic with the wily 'I'iger from Clemson. The oitcome of that game was very iImcertain, aild remained so tttil the last minute of play when 'the toe of Charlie Robinson, a 'T'iger back, de cided the issue by three points against lte Birds. The Gamecocks had the edge throughout the gaime, 'but seemed to lack the necessary ptinch to get the pigskin acr'oss the las,t whtite line when wotnder ful dIrives biy straight footbiall had carriedl it ahntost to the coveted line twice. However the Gamecocks arouised by their two sutccessive de feats and wyho had heen nainety wmitin for almost a year to take revenge on the Hurricane for the 7 to 0 defeat they had received at its hands a year ago, opened ipl) one of the most brilliant of fensives an defenses that has ever been seen oI Carolina field. The Hurricane could not gain ; in the meantime the Birds were accumulating four touch dow-ns, one in each period. Furman liasses found resting places against Gar net and Black jerseys, ten of the Hor nets aerial attempts being intercepted. Long runs on the part of Carolina players was a feature of the game. In the last period the Hurricanes showed a flash of its old time velocity when by a series of passes it managed to acquire one touchdown. The final score of 27 to 7 in the Gamecocks favor was one of the most complete upsets of the season. Following their victory over Furman the Carolina eleven journeyed to Or angeburg, and there on neutral ground, (lefeated the fast, scrappy Citadel out fit. 13 to 0. There may be some few fans who are disappointed over this small score after the splendid showing made against Furman, but when they realize that Citadel was fighting as the underdog, and that they always fight The Y Home ol 1604 P Bryan's Book 1440 M The,j c. new: dressers f< square to qualities all the 1 Flor J. What the outcome of the one remaining game will be is real y a bit doubtful. According to "Doc" Stewart, the Gamecocks have one of the iest defenses in, the South; this be ng the case the Centre Colonels will iave a hard time scoring through the ine;; and again, if we will remember he way these boys in Garnet and Black ntercepted thos eFurman passes, it is vident that the Colonels wil' have trou )le in getting away with an aerial at ack; and when it comes to end rons, tist remember that Alex Waite is on >ne wing of the line and Frankie Mey r is on the other, so any son of old Kentuck that starts around those ends s likely to get "canned" before he gets :o the line of scrimmage.
