NU,JIIl 7 CAROLINA FRESHMEN WIN BY LICKI Jeffords Play Features Game at the Fair. Well, folks, the varsity may drop a game now and thei hut that iincl of game lilies we call c.ur freshman team is still going like a house afire. Last Friday they (lidn't do a thini butt win their fourth straight. gainle from the fast Davidson fresh team by the suhstantial score of 21 to 3. And more than that, tiey) played such consistently good ball that there was never the slightest doibt in, the minds of those present as to which team would coeic out on top. The young Gamecocks played good. strong football. but more than that tley played smart, intelliger$ .foot.all. Brock's tean played "ieads ill" all the way through and took advantage of the slightest break ill the gaime of Wildcat eleven. The result. was a its thrills all the way through and kept hard-fought well played gaille that had the stands oi pinls every illinlite of till. playing time. The work of Jeffords and Boatwright ill the backfield and ,l Ihir<tuj jnj Ir11dauigh inl thle linie,. were the outstalldiig features of the day's play. Bartelle also played a strong defensive and very little ground was gained over him. Boatwright, in spite of injuries that made it very difficult for him to get over the field, played star ball through out anil ran his teani like a seasoned veteran. If 11. J. had been barking signals last 'I'ltursday tile score mnight not hav,e been the saie, we think. Jeffords put up onle of the best exhi bitions of football that has been seen inl Columbia this year. Ile was equal ly good( oIl ofTeuse and defense, ai his work stood out as perhaps the lost COIlSistelltly g0od play by any silgIl 1amn oil tile field. Our two big boys ill the line, Aix. Murdaugh and Joc I,illard, played first-class ball as usual. They work together about as well as anl iuld anld a tackle cliold. One thigll about their game is that, whllen the play is run over tile side of tile line, tley are always back taking mit (n( of the opposill!g backfield nen--and this has a whole lot to do with the long gains that outr backfield men make (In tackle. For Davidson. Johnston's field goal, which saved theiml from a coat of white wash. was tie fiost noteworthy fea (tire. Ilack ran well with tile 1ball and Sapperfield played a good gaflie at tackle.
