OPENING CONTEST WON FROM NEWBERRY TEAM Skinner, Vaughn and .Waite Play Sensational Basnket ball for Carolina. The first college game of the Carolina basketball season was played last Saturday night with Newberry College, the home team winning by a score of 24 to 8. Both teams put up a strong fight during the first half, but the last period was mostly one-sided. The Indians started off with what seemed to be a great passing machine, but their stellar playing was soon cut short by the effective de fense work . of the Carolina guards. The Gamecocks open ed the second period with a rush and kept a good pace thru out. Excellent defensive work was still maintained on their part and the Newberry team failed to get close enuf to their goal to shoot an ordinary bas ket. Three of their four goals were made from the middle of the court. Captain Skinner was the in dividual star of the Carolina quintet, playing his usual steady game on the defense and scoring well on the offense. Waite, participating in his first college game, made an excel jent showing at guard, and Vaughn played a spectacular game on the defense. Bender was the outstanding star of the visiting team, being responsible for three out of their four goals.
