PROFESSOR RUCKER ADDRESSES Y. M. C. A. Speaks Interestingly of "The Legal Aspects of Marriage." Prof. E. Marion Rucker lec tured to the Y. M. C. A. Wed nesday night on "The Legal Aspects of Marriage." He confined his remarks to the legal side of the question and spoke of the marriage agreement between the parties concerned. "Now how are we to know," he said, "whether the promise was ever made to marry or not? both parties may hold respectful posi tion in life and if the question should he brought up and denied by the one or other how can it be proved? How are we to know who is telling the truth? How aro you to tell whether the agree ment was really ever made or not?" "The law says that a man or woman may make any .Jtatement except about something they had talked about between them selves. The court will not allow any statement made that took place between man and wife. But if statement is made it must be truth. The fact that defen dant is married is no cause of de fense whatever." Facts in law along this line show that if a couple are mar ried and afterward become in sane itis not a ground for di vorce. But if person was insane before marriage there is ground for divorce. A fraudulent marriage is not legal. If a woman is fooled into marriage it is not legal if she wants to set it aside. "Marriage," said the speaker, "is a contract in which both parties concerned agree and know what they are doing. "What is marriage? some may ask. Some think there can be no marriage without white Examinati, Classes meeting at the desig times appointed in the following Friday..........M ., W ., F..... Monday.........M., W ,, F..... Bleachers have been provided in the gymnasium, and those who attend can watch the game with a great deal more pleasure than formerly. The Carolina aggregation has been beaten but once this year, and a good game is expected. flowing trains and robes, orange blossoms, preachers and such. All this is very nice indeed, but one is just as much married in rags and with only few to wit ness it as the white doings men tioned above." "If Bill Jones and Sam Smith enter into a contract to sell goods, they must live up to contract and abide by it, but it is different in marriage contract. No matter what agreement was made the man must support his wife. Re gardless of what she is worth, if she so desires, she can make him support her. But if they are living together she must go with him where he can best earn her support. On the other hand a woman, no matter how much she is worth, can stand by and see her husband carried to the poor ho'ise and a hand will not be raised to make her support him. The law does not require it. A man must support his child but the mother is not required by law to do so. "South Carolina is the only state in the union that does not have a divorce law. If a man in divorce state wants to rid him self of nis wife all he has to de is raise a row and it is an easy matter to get her consent. I be lieve the divorce law is immoral and that the people of South Carolina will not stand for it no matter what other states are doing." )n Schedule nated hours will be examined at table: A.
