EXCHANGE PROFESSOR DELIGHTS CAROLINA, ETC. simple and forceful English was not one of the several attain ments of the early translators of the Bible. "However the a simple sentences of the Hebrew - language and a sense of their di vie mission enabled them to overcome this handicap and avoid v the long words and complex sen tences of the English, their then con temporaries." "There is a quaintness to the Bihle, " said Dr. Forrest, "that adds much to its value as liter ature. The Hebrew language was short of adjectives and for these the translators substituted prepositional phrases, following the original. The Bible owes much of its literature to the fact that it was translated in the spa cious times of the great Eliza beth. I)r. Forrest's final lecture, "The Literary Influence of the English Biible," was delivered in his usual forceful and charming manner. In the di ;cus i n of why the influence of the English Bible, the fact was brought out that the first book to appear in Gothic, in Anglo-Saxon, in Mid dle English, in Modern English, respectively, was the Bible. "The Rible was at the beginning of things. The deep seriousness of the Anglo-Saxon and his interest in religion and morality, in that respect akin to the Hebrew, have always made the Bible the world's bestseller." Quotations, allusions and hints to the Bible th ronging our literature, always strike a responsive note in the English breast. For the stylist. God's Book has the message of word economy without sacrifice of clearness, force, or beauty. It teache, truthfulness of style, the oppo site of exclamatory, extravagant writings. Since "the style is the man," the supreme modlel in the art of writing is the book that in spires, elevates, ennobles man, the Holy Bible. WYMAN SPEAKS AT Y. M. C. A.
