CERCLE FRANCAIS I HEARS FRENCH SKIT Prof. Keith Gives Illustrated Lec- I ture, Using Official War Slides. "L'Enfant Terrible" was abroad in an amusing French skit, "Un Diner," given by four University students at the Cercle Francais last Monday. A. J. Beck of Anderson appeared as, the "pere," Miss Ayer of Flor ence as the "mere," G. A. Buch- t anon of Darlington as the "en fant," and H. G. Little of Con way as the "garcon." The en tire performance reflects great credit both upon the performers and the French department of t the University. l The feature of the evening was an illustrated lecture in k French by Prof. 0. L. Keith of the University. Prof. Keith's lecture was illustrated by a se- t ries of official slides taken for the French war department and I secured for the University thru\ Stephane Lazanne, editor of the "Matin" and member of the 1 French national committee in ! New York. The slides were ar- I ranged in three groups: first, t "Life in the Trenches," second, t "Aid Given France by America" I and last, "The Battles of Verdun c and Douaumont." The com- I ments accompanying the "pro-IT jections" were 'inusually well a done and altho written in France' t by a native. of that republic it did not contain even a hint of enmity or even dislike for the Germans. The lecture contribu ted much information concerning! the life of the soldiers and ;mod ern methods of warfare. Music was furnished by Prof. Robert Allen of Chicora College. The entire performance was repeated Thursday at Columbia College to a most appreciative' audience. C. D. BREARLEY WINS STATE PRELIMINARY ?'ON IN ( I fl FROM P%(:F. ONE.) Reavis, D. The assistants were: H. J. Blackmnon, and W. F. Duncan, of the Clar iosophic and Robert Moorman, .Jr., and Win. H. Prioleau, of the Euphradian societies. The South Carolina Inter-Col legiate Oratorical Association is composed of the literary societies in the nine state colleges and universities. Each institution sends one representative to con test in oratory for the three prizes awarded. He continued by sex >laining the essential conditfons iecessary for cheap power, and pplied these -essentials to ohldi ions as they actually exist around olumbia. Mr. Shand made the urvey on which Columbia bases er claim for the new nitrate lant and showed how thoroughly e had gone into the work.
