NORMAN ANGELL MAY ADDRESS. DIPLOMATS Noted Peace Authority Has Tentativ Date With Inter national Polity Club. Presdeit Hanna of the Inter national Polity Club announces that Mdr. Norman Angell a noted peace authority and the author of .several books dealing . withl' international relations, is sched uled to address the International Polity Club of the University of South. Carolina February 15. Mr. Angell is visiting ten Amer ican colleges under the auspic'es of the American Association for International Conciliation and the local club is fortunate in being given a date. The engagement is tentativ and will be confirmd, or chang ed, later. A great deal of interest is being manifested by the mem bers of the club in Mr. Angell's coming, and it is hoped that this address will mark the beginning of a series of addresses upon In ternational subjects by promi nent men of the .nation. J. C. PORTER ELECTED BASEBALL MANAGER Star Athlete from Pickens Will Direct the 1916 Game cock Nine. At a Student-body meeting last week Mr. Jerry C. Porter, of Pickens, was elected manager of the basehall team to succede Mr. W. M. Anderson who has not returnd to college. Mr. Porter is a very competent man to fiill this position having been connected very closely with ath leties. since he has been in college and therefore he has a large ex perience in such matters. Altho it is too early for any definit facts to be stated con cerning - the propects . for the coming season, rumor has it that there is material on the campus waiting for the season to open which will insure the Gamecocks a winning nine. Seniors to Hav Canes. The senior academic class will soon hav their class canes, a com mittee consisting of T. M. Jones, Orin Fi. Crow and P. K. Smith having made the selection and placed the order with the Mar shall-Frost Company. It is cus tomary for the seniors to carry class canes, and about a wveen' time the 1916 "old heads" will be flourishing their sporting rods. "When did your boy Josh pass his examinations?" CIVIC CLUB ELECTS FOR SECOND TERM Clrow Was Ch sen President, Featherstone Vice-President, Dr. Morse Advisor. The Civic Club of the Univer, sity of South Carolina elected officers for the second term at its meeting last Friday evening. The officers chosen were as fol lows:.president, Orin. F. Crow, Pauline; vice-president, J. Doug las Featherstone, Greenwood; secretary, W. M. Reynolds, Sun te.a; treasurer, Lloyd B. Harri son, Duncan. Dr. Josiah Morse professor of Sociology and Phil osophy in the University, was elected faculty advisor to the club. The Civic Club is a select organization which studies ' the larger conception of the term citizemhip. A. E. Merrimon is the retiring president. Before the election Friday evening Dr. Morse deliverd very instructiv address on "Certain Larger Duties of the Citizen." W. C. Mann was initiated into the club as a regular member. University Enrollment. The University of South Caro lina this year will hav the lar gest enrollment in its history. The number of students i.- ex pected to reach six hundred. It is pleasing also to note the number of Stateq represented at the University-fifteen States, besides Washington, D. C., and the Dominion of Canada. From the University directory, publisht the first of November, the following statistics were ob taind: number of students at Carolina, by States- Alabama, 2; Arkansas, 1; Georgia,9, Iowa, 1; Kansas, 1; Centucky, 2; Louisi ina, 1; Massachusetts, 1; Mississ ippi, 2; New Jersey, 2; North Carolina, 13; Pennsylvania, 3; 8outh Carolina, 489; Tennessee, L; Virginia, 3; Washington, D. C., 1; Canada, 1--total, 532. Of the five hundred and thirty two who had enrolled up to No vember 1, four hundred and eighty-nine were South Carolin ians, while forty-three . came from other States. Since the above figures were ,ompiled the enrollment of the University has reacht 555. Dr. Currell made a statement to this effect yesterday morning. This places the number of students r,he largest it has ever been in the history of the institution, a total of 551 being the highest number registerd in any previous y'ear.
