The Winthrop News says: "There are as many young women as yo-ung men in the State, and they are as necessary to the State" as the men. Yes, and they- are as necessary to young men as they are to the State, in our humble opinion. Dr. Currell, in speaking of Colgate's President who is to de liver the Founders' Day address here, says that "he has a pleas ing personality, and is forceful, majestic and interesting as a speaker." THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY The General Assembly of the State of South Carolina con venes today in the State House. Many students will avail them selves of the opportunity of see ing the solons in session, some for the first tim,. The sittings of the legislat,,-e -are instructiv in more ways than one, and we hope that no one will fail to wit ness at least one session of each house. It is a well known fact that the legislators do not visit the University in large numbers, but we hope that those few. who do come on the campus will re ceive every courtesy fromd Car olina r'en. Remember always that thle General Assembly furnishes the wherewithal on which the University exists and that, just at present, we are on the bread and water diet. . 0 0 THE LYNCH LETTER Attention is cald to the open letter of the University Race Commission printed in this issue. There is nothing we can add to this appeal. It speaks for itself. We hope the college and univer sity men of the South will liv up to what is~expected of them in helping to mold the right opin ion concerning this important matter. THE HORNET The announcement has been made that the students of Fur man University will publish this week the first issue of their new weekly newspaper, The Hornet. We take this opportunity of con gratulating the Furmanites upon the step they have taken and we want to welcome The Hornet in to the fold of South Caro'ina college journalism. The University of South Caro lina has been invited to join two prominent national honor oratorical and debating frater nities. The Debating Council at its last meeting took the matter up and appointed a committee consisting of Dr. A. C. Moore, H. 0. Hanna, and A. E. Merri mon, to consider the invitations, the qualifications for membership etc., to the two orders, and to de cide which one it would be ad visable for Carolina to join. The committee has not yet made any report. Societies Will Elect. The Clariosophic and Euphra dian societies will elect their spring term officers at their meetings next Saturday evening. A joint seesion of the two soci eties will probably be held for the purpose of electing editors of THE GAMECOCK and Carolin '41; F a man wants to "stand out In a crUwd " he don't have to act -peculiar. School of Arts -and Science, with various courses of study in Languages, History, Science, etc., leading to the degrees of A. B. and B. S. Eight General Scholarships worth from $100 to $150 each. 11. Schco' c. Education, which seeks to prepare persons to s-rve the State as teachers, principals and superin tendents of schools. In this course the A. B. is the degree conferred. III. Graduate School, with advanced courses leadiig to the degree of Master of Arts. Graduates of the colleges of South Carolina are.admitted to the University in all courses except Law, without charge for tuition. IV. School of Engineering, Civil and Electrical, leading to C. E. and M. E. de-iees. V. School (r Law, with a course leading to the degree of LL. B. The presence of the various courts and the use of the State Law Library afford exceptional facilities. College fee; for the year, $18, including medical *rttention. For women college fees are only $12. For those paying tuition, $40 additi6nal. Room, with light and service, $8 a year. Active teachers have the advantages of the University without any charge whatever. Loan funds available. Dining Room Scholarships with board free at Steward's Hall. For catalogue address W. S.
