TURTELTAUB WINS -G----ORATORICAL MEDAL Junior Declared Winner in Eu phradian Contest. S. D. Turteltaub, the "Duke," was declared winner in the Eu phradian Society annual 'oratori cal contest held in Clarisophic Hall last Monday evening. -The subject of the winning oration was, "Promptitude, Thrift, -and EfMciency." Mr. Turteltaub is'a member of the *junior law class. There were two other contes tants: t. D. Brearley, who spoke on "Heroism,". and Lucius C. Johnson, who used as his theme, "The 'Spirit of Civilization." J. ff. Cooper, F. W. Cappelman, at;d :-W. C. McLain acted as judges. H. C. Brearley, vice president of the Euphradian So ciety, presided. The contest was not as well attended as usual. Seniors vs. Juniors. This- was an -action of assump sit by the senior law class against the juniorlaw class of the Uni versity of South Carolina, at Co lumbia, S. C., for championship in football. The original ground of,-action -was Davis Field.' De fendants' demurrer was over ruled, but the judge granted the privilege of trial. The defence set up was the western goal post and lack of consideration -and practice. In answer to the first defence, the plaintiffs introduced their entire eleven men who, under oath, swore to protect their line; as for the second defence, to-wit, lack of consideration, the plaint iffs answered that they had sac rificed time and energy and stayed away from the matinees. For la 6f practice the plaintiffs pleaded the statute of limitations. Porter and Heyward for plaint iffs cited numerous forward pass es and end runs. Legge and F'olgdr foi- the defence based their arguments on line plunges and end runs. Chief Justice Osborne delivered the opinion of the court and awarded the plaintiffs -damages ..o the amount of- seven points and skinned elbows. Associate Justices Laurer and Kerr. con Kerred. Each high school enteii.ig tLe league will conduct a literary so ciety dr societies and will choose ejn , executive committeeman to represent the school. The' high ~schools will asso ciate . .themselves together in groups of three, as my. be most convenient, to form triangular unions for debate. In these j roups each high school is to debate on neutral ground both the affirmative and the negative of a query, so that two teams of two debaters each must be selected -by each high schoal entering the contest. Thus, A meets B at C; B meets C at A; and C me-ts A-at B; all on the same day and- all deba ting the same query. The winners of both sides of the query will meet and' debate for supremacy in preliminary and final contests, after the gen eral plan of the April inter-scho lastie oratorical meet. Winthrop, Clemson, and Caro lina have divided the State into klistricts, each institution taking charge of the high schools thus falling to it. State High School Inspector, W. H. Hand and Supt. R. C. Burts, of Rock Hill, President of the, Inter-High School Athletic and Oratorical Association complete the com mittee.: Debating leagues of this kind have worked splendidly in other states. Both the high schools arid the state at large have de rived great and lasting benefit from the interest in debating and in public discussion thus a roused. The committee will an nounce its plans later thru the press. Civic Club Meets. The Civic Club-met in Flinn Hall Tuesday evening. The meeting was held at this time rather than the regular time, Friday after Thanksgiving.. Dr. Reed Smith, faculty advisor of 'the club outlined the extension ,work of the University and the part the Civic Club could play in making '"Our campus the State."
