THE CAROLINIAN The first number of The Can linian for this session is ver creditable to the authors. wh are however too poorly supporl ed by their fellow students, Th numerous young men and wome who should be writing in Th Carolinian are like Rachel' children, which is a shame in student body of our size. Th number is dedicated to Prof a Reed Smith and the Extensio c. Division, and opens with a shor o account of his valuable ne' work in organizing Extliers work in the University. "Autumn Memorics" by Dabb _i is a pieze of ge.u :ily music ci verse. It is a stu ly in sunsE 15 moods, and while it is not ver =i powerful, it says what it neanE and does it without torturing lar guage or meter. Dabbs ha done better things, however. Jeter has two pieces of pros and one of verse, nearly on half of the contents of the issue His story "Back to the Fold" i a good one. The plot is tram parent, bit the character of th hero is attractive the sort of a traction that all rebels from Prc metheus down to Jesse Jame have exercised over the mind o young men. The pocm '" hei Pleasure -Calls" is full of ver new wine ard sin and shame an< Swinburne and Laurence HopE What it all means is unclear, ani p rhaps it is quite as well sc The verse is smooth and ring ing, and w>r.'iy of better mat ter. The "Sketch" called "Percer tion" is an example of a gemr which has been much cultivate in our literary circles on th campus of late, Dannei's "An the Author- Thou Thyself" i another example. Th. danger o trying forms not subject to an; rules is evident--the result ma be a new masterpiece, but it i more likely to be vague and rai bling language. A strict vers form--the sonnet for m, for ir stance,-is a boon to a . otng ar tist just because it retrains Lucius Johnson's "Cenotaph' is marked by the special charac t r of all his verses-it is melodi ous, and there are lines in it tha are full of true beauty, but ti. rale of rime is a tyranny in thi poem short shirift as usual- rea son gets short shrift from the ty rant. Yet are "'dnutghter'' ani "laughter" rimes of the future And did not E. A. Poe and P. 1] Wilde write of tombs by th sounding sea, and seas moanin; loudly on lonely shores? L. P. C. CHARLESTON MEDICINE MAN DELIVERS ADDRESS (Continued from front page.) fever. 0 We are living in a county 1pregnant with insects and small e animals that carry germs which n! cause the death of many thou e sands of people each year. By 8 destroying these apparantly harmless insects and small ani mals we would thereby prolong the life of many a- valuable citi zen. Happily to say, medical men n have awakened to this need and -t as the speaker stated, "so far a, we know them insect born n diseases are being destroyed." Dr. Lynch also touched upon s the new science of Eugenics. . It is high time that we as pa r -nts should know the condit:on of those whom our children rn irry", he said.
