The Varsity girls played the first basketball game Tuesday, and a most exhilarating game it was. The score was 2 to 0. It it to be noted that Peg Price showed remarkable pluck in not having succumbed when the force of the ball thrown in her face by our husky German, near ly knocked her senseless. The first score in the history of the co-eds was made by Kit Marks. A True Story. The president of society jumped an open switch, He called a freshman Silber* whose -iame was Rich. Silber, with a smile, said Rich was not his name, But I'm sure that if he's Silber he's Rich just the same. "Silber is German for silver. "Ram''-17' Adv. Manager Elected. At a recent meeting of the staff A. M. Jones was elected advertis ing manager of the Gar net and Black. Mr. Jones is a member of the junior class and, hag had considerable business ex. perience. This position is ren dered doubly difficult by the financial stringency, but Mr. Jones' friends believe he will make a success. New Directory Out. The new Directory of the Uni versity was distributed in chapel Friday morning. All the names of the students and faculty, to gether with their addresses, are given in this Directory. Every student should obtain one of these Directories in order to be able to find out the addresses of his fellow students. Experimentation, not brevity, is the soul of wit.-WVake Forest Student CLASS IN JOURNALISM DOES RESEARCH WORK Interesting Facts Obtained From Democratic Primary Lists. The class in journalism led by Prof. H. C. Davis, has been making news from the office of the clerk of court of Richland county. They have discovered some very remarkable facts by counting the number of names witnessed on the Democratic club rolls made last August. Some of the facts of interest are as follows: There are 849 voters in Rich land county who could not, or would not, sign their names. Of these 386 are in the county and 463 are in the city of Columbia. This gives -a percentage of illiter acy for the whole county of 10.9. The percentage for the country precincts is 18.2, while the urban percentage is 8.98. On the oth er hand the census figures for 1910 show that 66 per cent of the voters are illiterate. This shows that either the census figures are incorrect or that the illiterates are more interested in elections, and consequently a greater per cent of them register. By averaging the ages of 216 illiterate voters chosen at ran dom from all of the club rolls it was found that the average age of the illiterate voter is about 43 years. This is considerably above the average age of all the the voters, hence the number of illiterates must be decreasing with the improvement of our school system.
