Schwartz, Hanna and Harrison Also Make Splen did Debates. The annual Roddey Debate was held in the University chap el last. Monday evening. The query debated was, "Resolved, That it would be for the best in terest of the South to eliminate totally the cotton crop during the coming year." Raymon Schwartz and J. D. Griith up held the afiirnativ3, whi:e H. 0. Hanna and L. B. Harrison up held the negative, The judges dec'ded that the afiirmative had th , best debate. J. 1). Griflith w,, declared the best individual debater. Mr. Griffith is a high honor gradi.ate of Woficrd and is in the senior law c'ass. He has distin guished himself as a speaker in the Clariosophic Society. He was e'ected junior president of his society last spring. Mr. Griffith is a fo'ceful speaker and is apt to be heard in other con tests held at the University this year. The winner spoke against three of the strongest speakers on the campus. Raymon Schwartz. one of the Eurhrv diaa's repr'e(entatives, reci'ed his A. B. d'c ee at the :Jniver sity last June. le is now in the' senior law class. At a meeting of the advisor board Friday afternoon, bloc "C's" and stars were awarde for the past football seasor Four new "C's" were given, th men receiving the -ana beir. McMillan, Edmunds, Hampto and English. Stars were awarc ed to the following: Girardeat Porter, J., Stoney, Hill, He. ward, Going. 0,, and Langstor McMillan, who playel evet minute of the season at righ tackle, developed into one of th best linemen Carolina has eve had. He was seie.-ted by D: Edgerton as the best tackle i the State. Edmunds. a senioi has been on the varsity squa for the past two years and ha always played hard censister ball. Hampton. another one n those who received his letter fo the first time, has played on th varsity for two years. English who is a senior in the engineer ing department, has also playe on the varsity squad for the pas two years. He played guard "Country" is one of the hardes workers on the team, and re ceives a letter as a reward fo his earnest work. A star is awarded to any mai who has previously made hi "C", and it corresponds to a1 additional "C" being given Seven stars were awarded thi year. Girardeau has a "C" am three stars. Poiter, J. holds : "C" and one star. Stoney, ai all-round athlete, was givei another star. Hill, our gallan little captain, now has a "C' and three stars upon his sweater Heyward has won a "C" an two stars. DETAILS OF TRIANGULAR v DEBATE ANNOUNCED a South Carolina Will Meet Georgia and Tennessee. n Government Ownership of Rail roads to Be Discussed-Con test to Be Held May 1. y The details of the triangular k debate to be held in the spring d between the University of S. C., the University of Tennessee, e and the University of Georgia, g were announced a few days ago n by the debating council. Con tracts in outline have been sign ed for some time. The query is as follows: Re solved, "That the United States y government should own and op t erate all railroads engaged in; e inter-state commerce, both r. steam and electric." Carolina will uphold the negative side of! n the query against Georgia at Knoxville, Tenn., and the affirm d ative side against Tennessee at s Athens. Ga. The teams from t Georgia and Tennessee will de f hate in chapel. The debate will . proLably ccme off about the first e of May, all of the contests being held the same night. There will undoubtedly be d some hard fighting for repre t sentation on the teams. They will get enviable trips and are t well worth trying for. Carolina 1 . should win these debates this I r year, so the debating council urges the men to come out and try in the preliminaries. The t s question is a live one, and a great deal is to be learned in studying it. Holidays Dec. 23-Jan. 6. The happy Christmas tide is with us once again and all the students are expecting a big t time at home. This festival sea son is always looked forward to l with great pleasures by every I one, but especially by the stu- I dent since it means for him E among other pleasures, a trip I home, and "There's no place I like home." This long-looked- I forward-to-trip home means the, reuniting of family ties, the ( meeting of acquaintances and I friends, the seeing of one's best 'I girl, and . . . well. that's enough. The university closes for the s holidays. Dec. 22. and opens I January 6. Permit other people to have their views. .1 JUNIORS ARE WIN RS OF CLASS TROPHY CUP Freshmen Are Downed After Hard Fought Battle Layton's Spectacular 40 Yard Run in Last Quarter Scores Only Touchdown of Game. The junior eleven won the cup for their class Tuesday by defeat ng the freshmen 6 to 0. The ame was the hardest fought lass game seen this year and it was not until the fourth quarter ,hat Layton broke through the Preshman line and ran 40 yards Eor a touchdown. McEachern returned the kick )ff to the 40 yard line. Then by ,teady line plunging the juniors tarried the ball to their oppo ient's 8 yard line. The fresh nen took the ball on downs and tdvanced it to the middle of the ield. All during the rest of the irst half the game was a see-saw, ?ach team relying on line plung ng for small gains. The freshmen came back strong >r in the second half and threat med the junior's goal, but the ipper-classmen held. Chaplin ,arried the ball 29 yards in three ine plunges at this period. The ee-saw continued and it seemed Ls if the game would be a tie )ut just then Layton broke thru he freshman line for 40 yards mnd touchdown. Anderson miss d goal. With five minutes left o play, the freshmen attempted orward passes, but all failed. The line plunging of Layton Lnd Chaplin was especially rood. Altman, Hampton, and immons deserve mention.
