PROF. LOMAX SPEAKS. Delivers Interesting Lecture on Cowboy Ballad. iOn Thursday evening January 22, the; faelty and students of the University were treated to one of the most interesting lec tures of the season. Prof. J. R. Lomax, of the University of Tex as, delivered his lecture on the "Cowboy Bl)llad." Prof. Lomax has devoted a number of years of thorough and carerul study of the different American ballads and is without a doubt the fore most ant1 ority in America on ballads and'folk-lore of the West. The lecture was intended to show some of the characteristics of cowboy life as brought out in their songs 4nd melodies. The ballads selected by. Prof. Lomax represented both. the joyful as the pathetie:sfde:of the cowboy's life. With the'advance in the d eveloprient of the West the large ranclies are being replaoed by:small farms;:as a result, the cowboy who was so closely asso ciated with the early develop ment of the West is fast disap e pearing. MOORE, COLUMI It was the cowboy who aided the early settlers in fighting the Indians and establishing homes in that then sparsely settled country. This carefree life of the cowboy, full of lawlessness, was vividly pictured by Prof. Lomax. There were many bal lads in this collectton dealing with the rollicking, dont-care cowboy, while others were filled with pathos. Everyone who heard Prof. Lo max is greatly indebtedted to Professors Reed Smith and Har ry Davis, for it was tnrough their efforts that Prof. Lomax was secured to .deliver this enter taining as well as instructive lec ture. Baseball Date Changed. Manager Latimer has announ ced that the baseball games scheduled with Davidson for April 27, 28 have been changed to the 15th.. and 16th. With this change in the schedule the stu dents of the University will wit ness one solid week of baseball on Davis Field, commencing with Guilford, April 13th.
