We are enjoying to the fullest our many delightful rides with Alford in the Buick. Perplexed law student on an exam-"These technicalities of the law are certainly a disgrace to our land." A senior was heard to ask at the examination on Corporation and Finance: "Prof., what is cul minative voting?" * * ' According to the examinations just experienced, the memory of the freshmen seems to be still green around here. * ".' * A freshman asks if that pho tographer of Monday can make the student body look straight. Remembering the presence of Carpenter and so many lawyers he will be hard put to it. SALUTATION. With this issue of the' Game cock we make our initial bow into the field of journalism. .Our wor thy predecessors have indeed set for us a goodly pace. We with our feeble efforts can only strive, as best we can, to follow in their footsteps. It is for us, with the aid of every man on the campus, so nurture and make the Bird to crow for a time. The Gamecock is a student body publication and should be but an expression of student life and sentiment at Carolina. If it does nbt, it is a failure and a non entity. It cannot do this without the cooperation of all. We only ask that everyone give us their hearty support and make this old Bird crow loud and long. WHAT WILL HAPPEN? The merging of the College for Women with the University has been looked upon askant by every one who doesn't know exactly what is trying to be done. A popular idea has been that we will be over-run with co-eds. Some, no doubt, would be delight ed if such a thing were to take place. This, however, is an en tirely wrong impression. The social relationship of the two in stitutions will be but-slightly al tered. Some who oppose the change contend that. the College for Women was organized for the purpose of educating young wo men under the influence and teachings of the Southern Pres byterian Church. After all, it must be admitted that the prime object of organizing the college was to provide a school of higher learning for the young women of our State. If it can accompiish this object better as a State in stitution in conjunction with the University, then, the change is wortlj-while. That the change will be of mutual benefit to both institu tions appears to the writer as un questionable. We are heartily in favor of it. GO OUT FOR TRACK TEAM. Track at Carolina heretofore has been a farce. Last year the interest that was stirred up early in the season quietly evaporated by the time baseball games be gan to be played. We had as good track material in this stu dent body last year as in that of any student body of its size in the South; but, who mopped up with us? A certain institution of less than a hundred and fifty en rollment. What was the cause of this defeat? This is the problem that we must solve this season. Athletics at Carolina will be incomplete until we develop a track'team worthy of the name. There are only a limited number who can play baseball or football. But track is open to all. Strong men, lean men, tall men, short men and fleet men can all find something that they can do in that phase of athletics. This is one of the things that make track so important. Certain require ments are necessary to make a football or baseball player, but anybody can run. The most important thing in training for track wmrk i e gularity of practice. This is ab solutely necessary in oitler to put a man in the right physical con dition to occomplish anything in track. This is a crucial year in the de velopment of track at Carolina. If we put out a strong team the success of track in the future will be assured; if not, it will be doomed to failure as in past years. ELIGIBILITY OF ATHLETES. The adoption of the eligibility rules by the Advisory Board marks the beginning of a new era in athletics aL Carolina. Hereto fore, in games played with col7 leges in the S. I. A. A., or other associations, we have been great ly handicapped by the ruling out of many of our men. We have entered every contest under such association rules at a disadvan tage. Time after time we have had our teams torn to pieces, and had to submit without a murmer. Such a thing will nevpn occur in the future. Next year dvery man that goes out on the athletic field must be eligible under the rules adopted by the Advisory Board. If he is eligible under these rules he can play in every game of the season. The rules adopted are very similar to those under which athletics nt the University of Virginia are conducted, The adoption of these rules means that the source of materi al for Carolina's teams will be solely the high schools and prep schools of this and other states. Our team3 will no longer be ben efitted, at least for the first year, by receiving old-head material from other colleges through our law school or post graduate courses. The time was ripe for the adoption of these rules. Our foot ball team next year will not be weakened in the least as a re sult of their adoption. It is true that our baseball team for the next year or two may not equal some that we have had in the past, but the slump will not last long, We can develop a baseball team here at Carolina that will rank with any college of its size, in any association. The adoption of these rules will wipe out forever any spirit of professionalism, in regard to athletics, that might have arisen on the campus.
