BREAKAGE FEE, PLEASE. No man in the whole student body should be excused for not signing away his breakage fee to the athletic association. It is not a matter of paying out money now. It is merely giving the association the part of the break age fee that would be returned at the erI of the year and pay ing thrc - dollars extra at the beginning of the second term. Looked at from a business stand point, it is a good investment. A man gets for three dollars a season ticket that lets him in free to five varsity football games and one scrub game. These games, if paid for at the gate, wvould cost not less than five dollars. Any man on the campus who does not intend to go to these games, unless he has a good reason, ought to be ashamed of himself. We hope there are none such at Carolina. The men in the student body do not support the athletic as sociation as they should. The association is in the hole and has to resort to all sorts of means to raise funds. We feel that men ought to stick to the association as they stick to the teams. The two go hand in hand, they each make the other possible. Why not do your duty to the assoc,a tion and at the same time make a good business transaction? THIS THING OF HAZING. The custom of hazing fresh men is fast falling into disrepute at. Carolina. For the past two or three years there had been very little of it done until this fall when certain individuals, who happen not to be in college at all, took it upon themselves to initiate the first year men. We cannot see why hazing, when done in the spirit of fun, should be discriminated against. On the campus the first night of each session water, shoe-blacking and compulsory songs are the most harmfu1 instruments of initiation, unless now and then a belt gets loose by mistake. There everyone is in the game with the right spirit. But when men go in a band to a freshman's room, pull him out of bed, and beat him with a bed slat, this spirit of fun has dlegeneratedl into one of bru tish bullying. This was done this year' to such an extent that seve ral men were withdrawvn from school by their parents, andl we admnit it with a blush of shame for the uitiiversity. Somethiing ought to be done about it. The university cannot affordI to lose men in this way. It is either up to the student body to create a sentiment against such hazing so that these things cannot happen next year,.01r it is up to the faculty to take some steps t< show the people of the state tha men who are not in school shal not again disturb the peace o thes campus. THE HONOR SYSTEM. The honor system of the Uni versity of South Carolina is a, old as the institution itself. Ii i does not consist of the set of rule: and regulations that was draw up in 1909. This merely present; one of its many phases; namely, the regulation of a student's ac tion in the class room and exam ination hall. The honor system, in spirit, touches every side of student life. Why should not a man be just as liable to the ac tion of the honor system commit tee for stealing, gambling or haz ing as he is for dishonesty in the examination hall? You may say that it would give the committee too much power, but, fellows, the committee is on the job tc protect the reputation of the stu dent body. If any-of the things that we have mentioned do exist on the campus they will injure the re putation of the university and should be put in the jurisdiction of the honor system committee. It should be the duty of the com mittee to treat cases of this kind, when reported, just as it does breaches in the examination hall, although the same penalty need not be imposed. CAROLINA vs. DAVIDSON. Twice Carolina has met David son in debate. The first time she came out with colors flying, but last year the Presbyterians car ried off the honors. The third and deciding contest comes off on Thanksgiving day in Charlotte. We have the affirmative of the live, up-to-date question of com mission government, on which there are many magazine articles and on which the mayor of Co lumbia is an authority. The librarian intends to collect data for the debate and is willing to help those who enter in every possible way. The query is one that. should especially appeal to the men in the law department and we would like to see half a dozen law men trying out in the preliminary. Carolina has the record of the past two years in oratory to keep up. We must win this debate and this we cannot do if only three or four men enter the preliminary. Tpher.e should be at least ten men from whom to choose the team. Can you not be one of the ten?
