FACULTY RECITAL AT COLUMBIA COLLEGE First of the Season Was Given Last Night. Last night the faculty of Colum bia College gave their first public recital of the season. The faculty this year has some especially good musicians, and the different numbers were enjoyed to the fullest by the large audience who gathered in the auditorium. Many Carolina men were present and had a chance to see some very good friends among the student body during the short reception given after the program. Concerning Student Body Meetings. It has been noticed that a great number of students leave the chapel as soon as chapel service is over, disregarding altogether the o student body meetings that are held at that time. These meetings are important or they would not be held, and it is up to every student to stay and have his vote in anything that is (lone in regard to things on the campus. These are your meetings and they give you the only chance you have in the government of the college, so it behooves every man of you to stay to these meetings. If you are a few minutes late to your classes you will be excused on the grounds that you have been attend ing a student body meeting. Let everybody try and attend to this matter in the right way. President Cooper to the Trustees in 1831. "I desire to leave it on record here among your documents that my full and deliberate persuasion is that a Free College is as necessary as a Free School, and that the ex action of tuition money for educa tion here can neither be defended on the grounds of justice or experi ence. It might and would cost the State five thousand dollars a year more; but if it cost them twenty thousand more, it is a l)ittance com pared to the object in view and not worth a moment's consideration. This State in point of population is inferior to most. Its presenit suple riority in point of reputation and political standing is owing exclu sively to the talents of its leading men and a more general dliffusion of in formation than is found among its neighbors ; but I am constrained to say that this advantage is but com parative, and that the mass of popu lation in South Carolina does not possess5 half the knowvledge and in formation they might and ought to possess. The librarian has placed on a table at the entrance of the library several volumes bearing on the Balkans. Any one interested in the situation can get a good idea of the state of affairs by reading these books and the recent article in the magazine. Piano Tuned at Y. M. C. A. The piano at the Y. M. C. A. has been put in tune and is now in good shape. We iope to have some of the musicians in college performing on it quite frequently. The University of South Carolina Founded by the State in 1801 in the Capital City The University has the following departments of study: I. The College, with various courses of study in Lan guages, History, Science, etc., leading to the degrees of A. B. and B. S. Five general scholarships, worth from $100 to $150 each. II. Graduate School, with advanced courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts. The graduates of the colleges of South Carolina are ad mitted to the University in all courses, except Law, without charge for tuition. III. The School of Commerce and Finance, with a course leading to the degree of A. B. Special two-years' course for men who expect to enter business, journalism, the public service, or law. IV. School for Teachers, which seeks to prepare persons to serve the State as teachers, principals and superintendents of schools. In this course the A. B. degree is conferred. Forty-three teachers' scholarships, each worth $100 in cash and exemption from tuition and term fees. V. Engineering, Civil and Electrical, leading to the degrees of C. E. and Ei. E. Practical Work in Road Construction. VI. Law, with a course leading to the degree of LL. B. The presence of the various courts and the use of the State Law Library afford exceptional facilities. Graduates of the Law School are admitted to the State Bar without examination. Through its system of Extension Teaching the University offers correspondence courses, public lectures, and night classes, to persons unable otherwise - to receive academic training. College fees for the year, $18. For women college' fees are only $12. For those paying tuition, $40 additional. Roomi, with light and service, $8 a year.
