HOFFMAN WILL EDIT THE GAMECOCK Clariosophic Elected to Handle Reins of Weekly Publication-The Euphradian Assistants. At a joint meeting of the lEuphra dian and Clariosophic 1..iterary So cieties Saturday night V. V. loff man of the Clariosophic Society was elected editor-in-chief of 1i.: GAMECOCK for the next term. Hoffman is an assistant on the present staff and has already shown his ability in literary work. With his experience and the co-operation of the staff THE GAMECOCK will be in good hands. The Euphradian Society elected V. J. Robbins, H. C. Brearly and J. D. Featherstone as assistant edi tors for the next term. The Clario sophic Society will elect assistant editors at an early (late. The law editor and Y. M. C. A. editor will also be elected in the near future. Intra-Society Contests Come off at Early Date. The intra-society debate and de claimers' contest will be held in the Euphradian hall on the night of April 16th. Owing to the large number of participants there was some rumors that the debate would be changed into an oratorical con test. No defnite action has been taken yet. The question was re ferred to a committee consisting of Goggans and Brockinton. The contestants will be: Murphy, Bro hun, Edwards, Owens, Stork and \Voodrow. The contestants foi the declainmers' medal will be: Schwartz, H-ennig, Williams and others. In the Clariosophic Society the debaters' contest was changed into an oratorical contest. The contest ants will be: Hagood, Dickson, Mc lurray, Culp, McCord and Mann. The speakers in the declaimers' con test will be : Elkins. Bradley,. Teter and -olian. Davidson Plays Here on April 22-23. Davidson mixes things with Car olinia on April 22 and 23. Last year the Gamecocks broke even with the Tarheels. This year they ar.e going for the whole series. F. Mv. WVilliams has gone home to spendi( a few wvecks. Many Colleges to Attend Unveiling of Monument. The University will suspend next Thursday for the unveiling of the monument to the \Vomen of the Confederacy, but the, day will not be announced as a holiday, as was published some time ago. Classes will be adjourned at i i o'clock in order that the students and faculty may attend the exercises of the unveiling, and every one will theti go directly to the monument. College for \Vomen and Columbia College are to suspend and their entire student bodies will attend the exercises. Special trains will bring the stu dents of Winthrop, Lander and Coker to Columbia and a special will be run from Charleston for the con venience of the Citadel company which is to be present. W. P. Mills to Lecture Before B, Y. P. U. Next Tuesday. Mr. 'W. P. Mills will deliver his illustrated lecture on "Palestine" at the next weekly meeting of the B. Y. P. U. of First Baptist church, Tuesday evening, April 9th, begin ning promptly at 8:3o o'clock. E. S. C. Baker, a Carolina man, will conduct the preliminary devotional exercises of the evening. This occasion will afford those who have not heard Mr. Mills upon this sub ject and those who wish to hear him again an excellent opportunity of doing so. All Carolina men are cordially invited. Southern Oratorical Contest Will Be Held Wednesday Night. Next Wednesday night in the chapel the preliminary for the Southern Oratorical contest will be held. Much interest has been shown in the event. Last year in the pre liminary Alan johnstone, Jr., was chosen to represent the University at the University of Virginia. The speakers will be : From the Clario sophic Society, Foster and Vassey; from the Euphradian Society, John stone and Cappelmann. James Allan, Jr., will enter from the stu dent body. Gonzales Oratorical Contest Held on May 10th in Chapel. On May ioth, the Gonzales con test will be held in the chapel. Kent of University of Virginia Speaks Before New Organization on April 24. I)r. Charles W. Kent of the University of Virginia will deliver the annual address before the Southern College Press Association here on the evening of \Vednesday, April 24. I)r. Kent is a well known scholar and a fitting )erson to de liver the first annual address before the new organization. The news that Dr. Kent would accept the invitation was received with much pleasure by the commit tee on formation, Sam Latimer, Jr., and Broadus Mitchell. An elaborate programme is being arranged for the meeting and every thing points to a convention of much success. LITERARY SOCIETIES. Baseball Team Leaves for Northern Trip Next Tuesday. '[he Carolina baseball team leaves Tuesday, April 9th, for the first trip of the season. Carolina's suc cess with Lafayette and Penn. State, two of the big ones, shows that the wearers of the Garnet and Black have the goods. On the trip Caro lina will p)lay Wakeforest, A. and Mv. of North Carolina, WVashington and Lee, V.* M. L., V. P. I., William and Mary, Randolph Mvacon, Wood buriiy Foust and the Univ'ersity of Virginia. The team is doing great work, both wvith the stick and in the fielding Stunts.
