COLLEGE PRESS AS HAS BEEN Southern College Writers Meet Here Soon LIST OF INSTITUTIONS TO SEND DELEGATES Meetings Will Continue for Three Days, April 23, 24, 25-Details of Organization. The Southern College Press As sociation will hold its initial meeting in Columbia with the University of South Carolina, April 23, 24, 25. The organization of the Association has been going on since last fall under the direction of the Euphra dian and Clariosophic Literary So cieties, with Broadus Mitchell and Sam Latimer, Jr., as committee on formation. The institutions to be represented at the initial meeting are: University of Virginia, Vir ginia Polytechnic Institute, William and Mary, University of North Carolina, A. and M. of North Caro lina, Clemson College, University of Georgia and the University of South Carolina. The object of the organization is to promote college journalism in Southern institutions of learning. It is required that a college have at least a monthly and weekly publica tion before it can be admitted to membership. Charter membership was open only to such institutions in the States of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. There are i t colleges in these five States which are eligible for charter membership. and eight of them will be represented by oele gates at the first convention. Colleges and universities in other Southern States will he officially asked to join in the movement for the upbuilding of college journalism in the South at the initial gathering. It is most probable that the majority of those eligible will accept the invi tation. The programme for the coming meeting here will be elaborate, tak ing up three (lays. The committee wvill within a few (lays giv'e out the (lefnite plans for thie session. The meetings will all be open and( the citizens of Columbia are invited to attendl. On the evening of Wednes day, the 24th, the principal address of the convention wvill be delivered. As there is a Southern Oratorical OCIATION ORGANIZED IN DIXIE Association capping the South Car olina Intercollegiate Oratorical As sociation, so those behind the move ment thought there should be a Southern College Press Association capping the South Carolina College Press Association. It was thought best to make it a requirement that a college have at least a weekly and monthly publication, so as to encour age those ins:itutions which have not weeklies to establish them. A weekly paper adds much to the life of any college. The University of South Caro lina will entertain the delegates to the convention and in every way possible give them a real good time. Address in Chapel by Prof. Shannon Wednesday. Wednesday night in the chapel Prof. Shannon, an expert biologist and lecturer of note, addressed the mid-week meeting of the Y. M. C. A. upon "Sex." The speaker stressed the impor tance of education upon this, as upon all other subjects. Prof. Shannon held the close attention of one of the largest crowds of the year for over an hour, and sent them away with some valuable truths to reflect upon. Garnet and Black of 1912 Should Be Interesting. The nineteen hundred and twelve issue of the Garnet and Black, the annual publication by the students of the University, was sent to the press a few days ago. The work is being done by a firm in Buffalo, N. Y. The material submitted was of a first class quality, among which were some very good poems, draw ings, jokes and other material. The editors are very well pleased with the response of the students, and have endeavored to publish the sketches of most merit, regardless of their authors. The students are looking forward with much inter est to the advent of the 1912 Garnet and( Black. Joh)nny on the Spot Took Pictures of Opening Game. Blanchard, "Johnny on the spot," in his usual get-up-and-get-'emi manner, secured some of the most remnarkable p)ictures of the opening hlli game. PLANS BEING MADE FOR FUTURE DEBATES McMillan and Williams Will Confer With Virginia, North Carolina, Washington and Lee. Plans are being made by the de bating council to arrange several in tercollegiate debates with institu tions of North Carolina and Vir ginia for next year. University of Watts Carolina, University of Virginia and \Vashington and Lee may be debated if they are in a po sition to accept a challenge. David Son1 will possibly be contested again. The council has authorized T. S. McMillan and A. H. Williams, Jr., who were the managers of the two debates held this year, to consult the debating councils of the University of North Carolina, University of Virginia and \Vashington and Lee when they go to these institutions on the baseball trip in the near future. In case all favor this proposition, two will be chosen and contests ar ranged at suitable places. The monograms have been award ed by the debating council to the men who made the teams and won for Carolina. These are pretty lit tle gold monograms and appropriate awards for the work that was done to win the victories. Intra-Society Contests are Sched uled to Come off Soon. Plans for the Intra-Society contest are beginning to take dehnite form Much interest is being shown in both the debate and declaimers' con test. The medals which are offered for both of these contests are wor thy of any man in college, and ought to be eagerly sought after. Last Saturday night Lide, Hornich and Holman were unanimously elected as Euphradian marshals. Lide is chief. The contestants for the (e baters' medal will he: Murphy. Brohun, Stork, Edwards and Ow ens. The contestants for the (le claimers' medal will be: Schwartz, Danner, Williams and others. The date for the preliminaries has been been flxedl at the 17th of April. The query has not been dlecidled on vet. The contestants for the dleclaimu ers in the Clariosophic society will b)e: Elkins, Jeter, Brooks. Bradlley andl H-offmnan. For the dlebaters' medal the following men will speak: McMurray, Dick<son, Mann, Culp, McCord. H-agood, Barnett andl Foser. MANAGER APPOINTS FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS Davenport and Hannahan Will Be Aides to Fit'Simons Next Season. C. FitzSimons, manager of the football team at the University for next season, has appointed his assist ant managers as follows: 1-lamnahan and Davenport. \r. FitzSimons is working hard on his 1912 schedule and hopes to be able to make a definite announce ment as to the games to be played at an early (late. It is probable that the Thanksgiving game will be brought to Columbia this year, playing the Citadel. This will be the first time in many years that the last game of the season has been played on Davis field, and no doubt it will attract a large crowd. Of course the Clemson game will be staged on Thursday of Fair week. Seniors Make Further Arrangements For Commencement. The Senior class has about com pleted arrangements for commence ment exercises for this year. The loods have been ordered from Cotrell & Leonard of Philadelphia and vill be shipped the latter part of May. The color of the hood will be different from that of last year. Those graduating with different de grees will have a different colored hood. The invitations have also been selected and orlered. They will be on hand about the first of May. Southern and Gonzales Contests Held in Near Future. On April ioth the preliminary for the Southern oratorical contest will be held in the chapel. This honor was won last year by Alan John stone, Jr. The contestants will be from the Clariosophic.society: Vas sev and Foster. From the Euphra dian society, Cappelmann and Alan Johnstone, Jr. James Allen will enter the contest from the student hod )l v. The G;onzales contest will bie held in the chapel on the night of May 8th. The sp)eakers will be, from the Euphradian society: Woodr*ow, \-Vrightson and Murphy. From the C:lariosophlic: McMNillan.
