Every year there comes out in this issue of Tiii GAMECOCK a stereotyped editorial on Fair Wcek, mostly admonition and fatherly advice from an editor that is going to paint the town redder than any soph, and so here goes for our turn. But while we hold to the custom of a Fair Week editorial, we believe not much ill preaching. Fair Week is not a time for so very much prayer, nor either is it to be taken as a splendid Opportunity of using and testing your self-control. Tell a man this and where is the pleasure of the gala time? It is best to admit that there is never much studying, and that people are expected to stretch themselves and yell. Have the very best time vou Can, and do some things, in(eed a good many, that vol would not do in an ordi nary plain-long-so week, but only remember not to do too much that you will afterwards be accountable for. Calculate your safe limit, and go it with a vengeance. Treat the Clemson Cadets the best in the world you can. This is the gentlemanly thing to do, and if we win we will feel like raising all lhe more fuss for it, and if we lose we hav'e played the clean part. Absence Regulations. The new class absence regula tions are a blowv a the honor msytm. Education Day. All students of Carolina should be particularly interested in "Edu cation Day" at the Fair. This will be Tuesday this season. At this time all bona-fide students will be admitted to the Fair Grounds for the small price of twenty-five cents. Doubtless Carolinians will be in evidence along with Columbians and "C. F. W."iar.s. FOOTBALL SWEATERS TO BE PROCURED. A movement was set on foot last Monday morning to procure sweat ers for the football team that is to represent Carolina in the "Clemson game." For many years the team has bieen appearing on the field Fair week without any uniform sweaters. This year the Athletic Association has furnished the team with new uniforms, but it is impossible to expend any more funds at the pr-es ent time. At a student body meeting Moi day, a motion was made to the effect that the student body buy fifteen sweaters for the team, so that they might make a favorable impression at the "big game." A man from each tenement was appointed to collect the funds. If each man will pay only one twenty "five cents" it will be possible to pay for the sweaters when they arrive. Now, boys, let's show Clemson we can make as favorable an impression on the people who are at the game as they can. Let's look up the man from our tenement and fork up the "'coin." The sweaters have been ordered and will be here in time for the game. Fifteen roll neck garnet sweaters with a black "C." Those men who are awarded "C's" will keep their sweaters, while the others will be turned in to the Athletic Association for the next year's -team. Th'Ie Sophomore Class in English havec for their written wvork for this week a dlebate on the present regu lat ions regarding absences. These papers~ were due yesterday and some of them contain sonme good points against this regulation. T[heir first point is that it strikes a blow at the honor system. Tlhis is a strong p)oint andl should b)e considleredl by the Faculty, for anything that attacks or even throws a slur unlOnl this time-honored system is working detrimental to the institution. Secondly, they claim it is too much of a high school regulation. which might be borne out by a long discussion. Ihirdly, they claim the penalty too great,/and it might be added of a wrong kind. Fourthly, they say that although the old proceedings contained grave faults this is not the only plan to remedy same. And fifthly, they affirm that mis fortunes and faults are not sepa rated, but that for each the penalty is the same. These reasons that are given by these "wise guys" might well be considered by those who are con cerned in this matter, which means every one at Carolina, both of the faculty and student body. They might have added to their list the fact that the proceedings defeats the very thing for which it was instituted, namely, to punish the "chronic cutter," as we say. For these will find some loop-hole through which they will escape, while it works a hydship on those who attend class regularly, but for good reasons are compelled to "cut" a class. Several times during the year a person finds it impossible to attend class, and, not knowing of this beforehand, it is impossible to have the absence excused in advance, the only valid excuse. It comes out Wednesday-the day before the great game-and will tell everything about the players and the teams of both colleges. There will be a lot of original local talent displayed in the contributions from the student body at large. This will be a great part of the issue. It is hoped that some good cuts can be introduced to give the thing a visual aspect. Mr. T. Roy Reid, editor of the Clemson Tiger, has furnished The Gamecock copy on the Clemson prospects.
