On Neutral Ground, Witnessed by Large Crowds, Two Games Neu tralize Each Other. Tle Gamecocks left Columbia Tuesday, the 27th ult., for Green wood about -eighteen strong, includ ing two managers. The object of tli expedition was to take two games from the Davidson College team, one as a mornig frolic and the other after dinner as dessert. They got the forenoon frolic but failed to connect with the second edition of peaches and cream. In other words. the campaign proved a draw. In the first round of the first game tIe Red and Id ack started things off by sein(iig two runners across the pan. I'lut this lead was (piickly over com'e when in the same inning the first three Carolina players filled the bases and Tommy McMillan emptied them with a lione run drive far over center field. Each .team increased its count by two tallies. the final score being 6 to -1 in favor of the Gamecocks. Bailey, of Davidsoi, was touched for some timely bingles. Mills pitcledl his usual steady game. Mathematically speaking, the sec Mnd CItest was somewhat the raecip rocal of the first. Davidson scored several runs early in the game on timiely hits, the wildness of Wyche an( one or tvo "foozles" by his teammates. The Garnet and Mack team only gathered two tallies out of .the slpply on hand, while the David son )tinch reape(d seven. The play ing of both games was a little weird on account of the proximity of cer taiin fences, notably in right field. A ball h)it over thiese two 11-car barriers only couited for two bases. Several doubles were Iade in this way. Owen, the hefty backstop. received well in both games and deserves credit for his work, as he is suffering with a lame wrist caused by a stray pitched ball recently wihile at bat. Many of the playeris atteildeld the dalce in the town hall that night and the entire trip was much enjoyed by all who accompanied the expedition. In a neck-to-neck game rel)lete with that uneasy element of sus pense, Carolina, on Vedinesday, won from Washington and Lee in the ninth inning, the score being 5-1. The game was fast and exciting throughout, an(l not lacking in sen sational plays. liarksdal-e, for Caro lina, scooped a short fly off the blades of grass that looked certain for a hit, and Smith, for Vashing won and Iee, stabbed a hot liner that was seemingly beyond reach. Mills and Gwathmey were the slabmen. The former )itche( a st-'eady game, and) pulled out of sev eral pinches, and walked only ofe man. Gwathmey, for. Washington and Lee. though striking out more men than \lills. gave three bases on balls. 'T"he gaile opened oimlillinsly for Carolina. In the first inning, with Smitih out, Webst-er singled. Dona hue repeated the performance to left, and on Barksdale's fumble, 'Webster reached third. Donahue stole sec ond. Brown then hit to \Wideman and Vebster beat the thrmw hoie. u'llrbyfill walked, and the bases were full. Erwin hit to McMillan, and another run was scored when )oialiue beat the throw. In the third inning came the Gamecocks' first score. Greenvood, as usual, extended the glad hand of hearty hospitality to the college meii of the State at the Oratorical contest. Everything evinced this kildly spirit from the large electric sign of "Welcome, S. C. 1. 0. A.." to the pleasait smile a(l handshake of the citizens. It was a great day and a greater night. T'lhos.e who were in Greenwood Thliursday night had the pleasure of hearing the Furman Glee Club. Of course Carolina will yield first place to no coiers in excellence of Glee Club. but all enjoyed Furman's en tertainm.ent. Friday morning came our victory over Davidson, Friday afternoon our iournful and iois tened defeat. (Let's blame the rain for it).
