CAROLINA AND DAVIDSON
AGAIN BREAK EVEN.
On Neutral Ground, Witnessed by
Large Crowds, Two Games Neu
tralize Each Other.
Tle Gamecocks left Columbia
Tuesday, the 27th ult., for Green
wood about -eighteen strong, includ
ing two managers. The object of tli
expedition was to take two games
from the Davidson College team,
one as a mornig frolic and the other
after dinner as dessert. They got the
forenoon frolic but failed to connect
with the second edition of peaches
and cream. In other words. the
campaign proved a draw.
In the first round of the first game
tIe Red and Id ack started things off
by sein(iig two runners across the
pan. I'lut this lead was (piickly over
com'e when in the same inning the
first three Carolina players filled the
bases and Tommy McMillan emptied
them with a lione run drive far over
center field. Each .team increased
its count by two tallies. the final
score being 6 to -1 in favor of the
Gamecocks. Bailey, of Davidsoi,
was touched for some timely bingles.
Mills pitcledl his usual steady game.
Mathematically speaking, the sec
Mnd CItest was somewhat the raecip
rocal of the first. Davidson scored
several runs early in the game on
timiely hits, the wildness of Wyche
an( one or tvo "foozles" by his
teammates. The Garnet and Mack
team only gathered two tallies out of
.the slpply on hand, while the David
son )tinch reape(d seven. The play
ing of both games was a little weird
on account of the proximity of cer
taiin fences, notably in right field. A
ball h)it over thiese two 11-car barriers
only couited for two bases. Several
doubles were Iade in this way.
Owen, the hefty backstop. received
well in both games and deserves
credit for his work, as he is suffering
with a lame wrist caused by a stray
pitched ball recently wihile at bat.
Many of the playeris atteildeld the
dalce in the town hall that night and
the entire trip was much enjoyed by
all who accompanied the expedition.
It is understood that the trip was a
financial success and will aid in mak
ing mat.ters even for the season.

Five to Four.
In a neck-to-neck game rel)lete
with that uneasy element of sus
pense, Carolina, on Vedinesday, won
from Washington and Lee in the
ninth inning, the score being 5-1.
The game was fast and exciting
throughout, an(l not lacking in sen
sational plays. liarksdal-e, for Caro
lina, scooped a short fly off the
blades of grass that looked certain
for a hit, and Smith, for Vashing
won and Iee, stabbed a hot liner
that was seemingly beyond reach.
Mills and Gwathmey were the
slabmen. The former )itche( a
st-'eady game, and) pulled out of sev
eral pinches, and walked only ofe
man. Gwathmey, for. Washington
and Lee. though striking out more
men than \lills. gave three bases on
balls.
'T"he gaile opened oimlillinsly for
Carolina. In the first inning, with
Smitih out, Webst-er singled. Dona
hue repeated the performance to left,
and on Barksdale's fumble, 'Webster
reached third. Donahue stole sec
ond. Brown then hit to \Wideman
and Vebster beat the thrmw hoie.
u'llrbyfill walked, and the bases
were full. Erwin hit to McMillan,
and another run was scored when
)oialiue beat the throw.
In the third inning came the
Gamecocks' first score. Mills started
things with a single: went to see
"ndon il arksdale's htni , got to third
on Wideianl's walking, and came
home on .\lc.\illan's gronder. An
otlh(r ill u appeared in the next in
ning. Owen secired a single and
weit to second on Watts' sacrifice.
Gwathimey threw wild trying to
catch him on secoid, and lie wenti to'
third. and scored on the ball getting
away from 'Webster. Two more
runs came in the next two innings
through hits and the trend of cilrcum1
stancos.
lin the eighth the sky became
clouded and the grandstand nervotis,
for the score was tie(. Webster and
1irown were the home-comers. This
was cause(l )y two hits and adverse
happenings for us. In the niinth
WVashinigton and Lee was held score
less by a small margin. Ilunt Caro
lina, assuming a determined look. dhe
cidhed to end( the game, and did so.
Mills sinigled andh Barksdale bu'nted;
both safe. Moore. running for Mills,

Moore scored oin the scueeze play,
and the game was 'ended.
T'he ganie was p)r'obably the best
played on Davis Field this year,
although the hits and errors by 1)oth
sides were numerous. lut the in
terest and exciting features were
there in prominent evidence.

Twelve to Five.
Last Thursday afternoon. an after
noon glorious in its abundance of
sunshine alld steadliness of atmos
phere, the Gamecocks, after tasting
the blood of the \WVashi ngton and
Iee warriors in the game the day
before, sharpened their spurs, and
wet their lips for the sweet rev, enge
of their disgracefil defeat in lexing
ton.
Th.e game progesses for an un
eventful two innings, and thenl in the
third, w\,ith two out, Moore, for
Washington ai(d Lee, gets a hit an(l,
after stealing, second, scores on a
foul hit and sone wild throws. In
this same inning, oi a coullie of safe
hits and by good headwork of bat
ters, Barksdale and Whitner score.
Not satisfied with this. McMillan
rns in on Owen's hit to second,
and McSween scores on a two-bag
ger by Watts.
Ill the fiourth I)oliahue scores for
Washington and Lee ol a long idrive
to left. Carolina no score.
In lifth Moore scores for Washing
ton al i,ee on a wil(l throw to
first. Carolinla determines to (10 as
well, so Widemanl, aft-er hitting pill
for two sacks, kicks the plate oil Mc
Millan's hit to second.
Washington and Lee fail to mate
rializ.e their lolpe in the sixth and
again take the field. I lere 'he sad

WVyche sacrifices him to second.
Iarksdale gets safe hit, and Mills
glides to third. Whitner th-en hits
to pitcher. who boots ball into side
lines, an( inl the ensuing confusion
Mills and IBarksdale score, Vhitner
going to second. Wideianli makes
thlirdh, andl then on a plassedl hall raps
