\ LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. THURSDAY,December SO. i t t 1888. > «w Advertleemenr*. Xmas Goods—J. H. Cummiugs. Holiday Gifts-McMaster, Brice & Ketchin. ( ■.cat Brier*. —There is every indication of a very quiet Christmas in Winnsboro. —The bill to repeal the Lien Law was killed in the Senate on Tuesday. —Mr. Connor’s new store will be ready for occupancy in about two weeks. —Dr. Salvo’s colored minstrels con tinue their open-air concerts on the street. —Every good man ought to feel it his duty to pay for his paper before Christmas. —The south-bound train is again running very irregularly—rarely arriv ing on schedule time. --The Rev. A. II. Lester has been appointed to take charge of the Metho dist Church at this place next year. —In Tuesday’s paper we reported Representative McMcekin’s vote on the new railroad bill improperly. Ho voted for the bill. —Every teacher in the county who intends to apply for a certificate should attend the Institute on the 2nd Janu ary, to prepare for the examination on the following day. —We omitted to mention the intro duction, by Mr. McMaster, of a bill to repeal the Act organizing School District No. 16. We have not yet heard what was the fate of the bill. —All parties who bought guanos from us must settle on or before the 1st of November, or they wii lose the cotton option and will have to pay the face of their notes in money. R. J. McCarl'et & Co. Oct 27-tf * —We were mistaken in saying that the bill introduced by Representative McMaster, to levy a license-tax on dogs, was killed. On the contrary, there is every probability that it will become a law. We hope so. —Messrs. R. J. McCarley & Co. are prepared to buy or sell Future Con tracts for any parties wishing to oper ate iu this line. All business confiden tial. We receive press dispatches four times a day and will keep our custom ers posted.* _ Oct 16-tf* Gone to Arkansas.—Mr.. A. P. Miller, with his family, lefton Monday, the 17th iust., for Arkansas. He will no at first to Little Rock, where he will leave his family, and then look about for a place where he may permanently locate. Mr. Miller’s departure will be universally regretted. A native of Wiidwboro, he has spent his whole life here, and has made numerous warm friends. He has always sustained the highest character for personal in- legrity, and has always shown his willingness to discharge every duty incident to his citizenship. He was for two successive terms a warden of the town. We trust he may achieve full success in his now home. as Jason, the Hero of the Golden Fleece, and Mr. O. Y. Owings as Orpheus, the Poet and Seer. Among the female characters, Miss Gussie Aiken impersonated Medea, the Hero ine, Miss fctarah Wolfe appearing as Creusa and Miss Sallie Gladden as lanthe. A short but sad and touching trag edy it was, and from the naoment of its commencement till the curtain fell upon the last scene the appreciative and cultured audience looked and lis tened iu sympathy with the amateur actors and applauded to the echo the triumphs of the evening. The stately dignity of the royal King, the fiery hate and indignant scorn of the lordly Jason, the solemn and oracular utterances of the Seer and Poet, the fervid and eloquent speeches of the forsaken Medea, and the simple and confiding love of the innocent Creusa were all admirably rendered, doing justice alike to the players and to the beautiful drama they represented. The rendition of a trag edy iu Winnsboro by an amateur club was an experiment corcerning which there were many misgivings, but the results of Thucsday evening have demonstrated the fact that there is in our town dramatic talent of no mean order. Part second of the program consisted of a song and music—“Howard’s Baby Song”—and a well selected piece by the Winnsboro Cornet Band. The music was an important feature of the ; occasion, and many merited compli ments were paid the musicians iu the course of the evening. Third and last, but not least, came the comedy, and fittingly and appro priately did it conclude the dramatic festivities of the 18th inst. Mister Poppleton, the baby nurse, and the husband hunters certainly adapted themselves to the situation, and the performance upon the whole was made amusing and entertaining throughout. The gross receipts at the door amount ed to seventy-eight dollars, and a con siderable portion of this will be for warded to Mrf. Pickens, the Vice- Regent of .he State, for the benefit of the South Carolina room at Mount Vernon. After the performance was over, the young ladies and gentlemen remained in the hall and participated in a dance. Our congratulations to the amateur tragedians and comedians. • Pkrsonai..—John H. Pearson, Esq., of the Columbia bar, was in town on Wednesday, on professional business. The Rev. Charles E. McDonald, of Mecklenburg county, N. C., is in Winnsboro now and will spend the Christmas holidays with his friends and relatives here. The familiar faces of old friends are welcome in our hospitable town. A. M. Mackey, Esq., and wife left this place on Wednesday’s north-bound train for Washington, D. C. He ex pects to make his home at the capital for some months, and will probably settle permanently in the spring of next year in one of the Western States. Mr. Mackey practised law in Winns boro for ten years or more, and during his stay here made many friends. He is a lawyer of no ordinary ability. Success to him in his new home. ITEMS FROM FEASTERVILLE. Mr. J. E. Robinson, of Georgia, and Mrs. Dove, of Tennessee, are visiting friends in the Corner. —The Corner congratulates itself on having a county seat free from the licensed liquor traffic; and it trusts the signs “Liquor for Sale”, which have beeu lining the country roads radiating from that town to the injury of its good name, may now be re moved, to appear no more. —Mr.' Henry McLane and family have moved to Chesterfield county, Mr. Mack Coleman to his mother’s, and Mr. Robt. Y. Clowney to a house recently built near Mr. J. C. Robert son’s. —Happy Christmas to The News and Herald. —Married, on the morning of the 12th inst., by H. J. F. W. Coleman, Esq., Mr. Jacob C. Coleman, of Fair- field, to Miss Emma Cockeran, of Alabama, but recently a guest of Mr. Wright’s. D. B.
