After, this week members are expected to come in at a lively rate. On the Re publican side, among those spoken of tor the complimentary nomination for Speaker is the venerable Judge Kelley, of IPehnsyvania, the father of the House and chairman of the committee on ways and means of the last House. In regard to tlie Democratic contest- lj V | ants for the offices of the House, it is a remarkable fact that up to this time each candidate is fighting the battle on i his own hook, and no movements have yet been initiated looking to combina tions. Efforts will, however, most probably be made in this direction un less it be found definitely, as is said to be tlie ease, that none of the candidates for Speaker, clerk, sergeant-at-arms or door-keeper, will be able to control more than a moiety of votes outside oV the pledges for them individually. The.first step in the general plan was the “fixing” of the juries. This scSnrr to have been to some extent successful. The govern ment has also employed counsel to assist District Attorney Melton—in the person of Mr. Emory Speer, the Georgia independent. This individual seems to owe his appointment to tills particular work to tlie fact that lie re cently managed to convict some par ties in Georgia who were tried for political offences. How far Mr. Speer’s success was due to the peculiar com plexion of the juries, it is perhaps not altogether safe to say. But it is a fact that tlie conviction was a very general surprise. The inference, in most peo ple’s tnlhds, is that tin jury was made r.p to meet tlie exigencies of the prose cution. Mr. Melton seems to have girded ids Joins for the fight in this State, and a warm time mar be expect ed. Against these effort? of the govern ment, there must bo a combined re sistance on the part of tlie good people of the State. The parties who will be tried are simply representatives of the Democratic party of So'utli Carolina. Tlio whole purpose of the prosecution is political. That purpose is to- strike a blow which shall firsts intimidate, then demoralize, their disintegrate the only political organization which can ■ • *1. I ensure pence and prosperity in South Carolina. It is therefore peculiarly proper that tlie State Democratic Ex ecutive Committee should have taken the matter in hand by employing coun sel and by taking other measure* for the proper and vigorous the defence.
