June 16 Ohio is rapidly taking the lead in divorce, and Garfield's old district and Hamilton county are thought to be ahead of all other localities. A cotfi- mittee of the Episcopal Church makes a report frightful to contemplate. The concluding passage indicates that so ciety is rotting out in that great West ern State. Hear this: Since 1867, fifteen years ago, the number of divorces has doubled itself, while the population has probably not gained more than 15 per cent. The suits before the courts in 1882 were twice as many as in 1871, their number in the former year be ing over 4,500. For every -rtiviT^e suit brought there wore but six marriages in 1882. In Hamilton county there is an average of over one petition a day. At the present rate there will soon be as many persons applying for legal separation as apply for marriage licenses. We cannot put that time off farther than 1890. In twenty years there will be as many divorces as marriages. After that time the number of families in Ohio will be diminished by divorce at a greater rate than it is increased by marriage. FOR HALF.
