the Slate does not punish those who
'maltreat them. Mon who hire the

More than one hundred thousand
children earn their living in New York

dred different kinds of occupations
where they earn money. About 4,000

artificial flowers. There are thousands
of street Arabs who get r living hap

The Ohio State Democratic conven
tion meets next Thursday. The indi
cations, so far, are that‘Judge George
Hoadley will be the nominee for Gov-
drnor,'as Hamilton county is solid for
■him, and a number of other couifSes
have instructed their delegates to sup
port him. He is regarded as a very
strong man, and popular among the
Germans, whose counsel he was in the
contested liquor cases. He bears a
spotless reputation. The probabilities
are that “there is walkin’ before” Mr.

Jewish law, which insures cleanliness
and health. Cattle are selected strict

animals are rigorously rejected. A
Kosher butcher says: “A great many
of the cattle are diseased, and it would
be much better for the health of the city

HAMILTON FLEMING.
June 16
Ohio is rapidly taking the lead in
divorce, and Garfield's old district and
Hamilton county are thought to be
ahead of all other localities. A cotfi-
mittee of the Episcopal Church makes
a report frightful to contemplate. The
concluding passage indicates that so
ciety is rotting out in that great West
ern State. Hear this:
Since 1867, fifteen years ago, the number
of divorces has doubled itself, while the
population has probably not gained more
than 15 per cent. The suits before the
courts in 1882 were twice as many as in
1871, their number in the former year be
ing over 4,500. For every -rtiviT^e suit
brought there wore but six marriages in
1882. In Hamilton county there is
an average of over one petition a day. At
the present rate there will soon be as many
persons applying for legal separation as
apply for marriage licenses. We cannot
put that time off farther than 1890. In
twenty years there will be as many divorces
as marriages. After that time the number
of families in Ohio will be diminished by
divorce at a greater rate than it is increased
by marriage.
