The ftirniture was shipped to the firm of J. B. Crosby A sPltlNQ Co., and the railroad agent notified said firm of its arrive], and I have been informed that Mr. J. B. Crosby declined to take the furniture out and pay freight on same until he could see Mr. D. P. Crosby, as he did not make the tii*der, find kndw nothing abotit it. The order must have been made by , „ , ! Mr. Busby, with the knowledge and Free Trade candidate for the Speaker- conwnt of Mr< D< P . Crosby . It doe » seem that the only ones who deliber ated over the propriety and wisdom of buying this furniture were Messrs j W. B. Estes, D.P. Crosby and D.B. OUR NEW STOCK OF WE HAVE TRXEilD TIIIEIM: I! Irish aympatliies are unquestion ably with Brady in his misfortune, and the execution of a man of questionable guilt will complicate rather than solve the problem of Irish hate and Briiish domination. TIif Iroquoris Democratic Chib cele-' brated fhd anniversary of Jcffbrson’s birthday iw Chicago several days ago. benator Bayard delivered a forcible »nd eloquent speech in response to the toast, “Our Country.” A number of nddresses were made by representative Democrats from different sections of the country. The political situation was thoroughly and ably canvassed, and the general drift of opinion seemed to favor Tilden for the Democratic standard-bearer in 1884. Captain Estes means when he uses the wbrd “we”; and he claims that this pnrehase was made without detriment to any other sCltool, white or colored. So far from this being a fact the schools in this neighborhood have received no benefit from the School Fund in build ing school-houses and buying furni ture—no, not even common wooden benches. Parents have to furnish benches and desks for their children at their private expense. In this vicinity we have no school-houses. The teach er, Miss C. J; Sheltoit, furnished a school-house without receiving any rent for the same. As to the colored school, it was taught in an old dilapi dated church, furnished by the liber ality of its members. The public schools have onlv lasted “five” months. Mr. Busby received pay for “eight” months. I can’t see any justice in this discrimination. “O, consistency, thou art a jewel.” Pledging my official and unofficial co-operation in that common cause Of “justice to all”, 1 am, most respect fully, Frank Kerr, School Trustee. Tntc prominent Land Leaguers of the West condemn tlie actions of (lie Itossa faction in New York in the strongest and sevewsst terms. Major John Byrne, President of the Cincin nati Land League, has written to the President of the New York Land Leagiie, denouncing the sentiments ex pressed and action taken at a recent meeting held in New York City. The belief was expressed ihai O'Douovan Kossa and bis fellows were the paid agents of the English government. The letter condemned the dynamite policy, and declares the true Land League policy to be consistent with American citizenship and respectable effort. The caption prefixed to an editorial sentence frottt The News anw Herald by the Charleston Mercury is suf ficiently indicative of the sentiments «>f that journal upon the political per secutions in South Carolina. It reads; Why the People are not “Loyal.”’ animosity or disloyal citizens. Bordering on Becessiun. We could not wonder if our people em tertained feelings of, animosity towards the - government, when such arrests are perpe trated In Its name and under the semblance of its laws.— Winnsboro Nem and Jlerald. There can be nothing disloyal or treasonable in an honest and hearty criticism upon the actions of the Gov ernment and its officials,- national or State. And if to 1 condemn the high handed outrages of the law officers of the Government in the arrest and com mitment of the best and most respected citizens of the State upon stauiowy and unfounded charges, smacks of treason, and “borders on secesston,” we say to the Charleston Mercury f “make the most of it!”’ Popular Clergyman Under a Mule. It was in the Yosenute, on a steep and rugged mountain road. The party num bered about a dozen, and tlie jolliest of all was a well-known dominie. Somehow or other his mule stumbled and rolled over and over, the dominie clinging fast to him. When they came to a stop the mule was on top. Both the dominie and the mule were badly braised. One of the party happened to have a bottle of Perry Davis’s Pain Killer. In a few hours they were ready to proceed on their journey. * IS ARRIVING DAILYi —If you don’t want to freeze when its cold; suffer from excessive jierspiration when its wann—use Brown’s Iron Bitters.* CONVICT LABOR. A bill is now pending before the Legislature of New York, which pro vides that no further contract shall be mad'* with reference to the employ ment ot the convicts in«the State peni tentinry, bnt they shall hereafter be em ployed for the public account in manu facturing articles to be’ sold in the general! market. The measure has passed to a third reading, and will probably become a law. The example net is,one worthy of imitation, and it is to be hoped that it will arouse pub lic sentiment against a similar evil in South Carolina. Our experience for several years past has certainly not been such as to warrant a continuation of a system alike unfriendly to tlie instincts of humanity and the good sense of tho-country. Much has been said and ranch more ought to be said*, by the press of the State against the cruel and inhuman treatment of the convicts under the shadow and cover of the law. Hiring out the inmates of the penitentiary to private parties for-theipurpose of gain is a practice barbarous and unchri:- tian, and’the newspapers of rtie State owe it to themselves and to the countiy at large to continue the warfare against it until it is checked by-the’Strong arm of legal authority.
