Ms. Pambx, wko has long bet a a very j •ucoeMfa? grower of laspberries, gave the New Jersey Horticultural Society a state- meet of seme of the large profits obtained when this fruit is sold at high prices. He said the best American varieties, with fair treatment, will yield as many bushels per acre ns corn, and generally bring 6 tunes as much in market, and when once plant ed remain for several years A neighbor of his sent to market a one horse wagon- toad of red raspberries, and received $220 for the lot. A lady living near him rented out her farm, reserving a portion for a raspberry and blackberry plantation, from which she fold one year 48,000 quarts of berries, worth, at 8 cents a quart, $3440, which was more than the tenant made from ail the other ciope on the farm. A successful fruit grower thinks that many apple trees are set too near together; two rods apart is near enough. The land for an orchard must be kept in good con dition. He top-dresses his oicht’d once in three years, principally with a thick coating of straw. He allows hogs to run in his orchard, aud plows the land until the trees are so large as to interfere with such a practice. Last year he picked 46 barrels of Greenings from four trees. Or chards thrive best near bodies of water. Trees should be judiciously trimmed while young. JMLany trees are injured by over- prumng. Trees should be grafted when they are from one inch to one and one- half inches in diameter. Cauuflowk aim Broccoli.—There are among the most delicious of vegetables and are accidental variations of the cab bage. Cauliflower Is always white, but broccoli varies from g.-een to purple, white and sulphur color. Sow the seeds for Au tumn use in May and transplant In July. For early Summer use sow the seeds in September and prick Ibe plants into cold frames in Novemt^r and transplant to the open ground in the Spring. The soil for these vegetables must be rich, moist, deep, and friable. The following are among the best varieties of each cauliflower; Snow Ball, Extra Early Paris, Early Dwarf Es- furt. Hall Early Paris, Eiriy Asiatic, Late Date*. Broccoli. Early White and Purple Cape are as good as any. Peanut-growing is one of the most profits ole industries of Virginia. The re turns never fall below $60 per acre, even in seasons of drought, and somelimea rise as high as $300. A light, sandy soil is beet. The nut must have plenty of rain in August in order to reach perfection. There are three grades in market, the strictly prime, the prime and the medium, the latter of which is sold to the retell buyer. The best are sent abroad or sold to the finest candy matters. The peanut candy sold at 40 cents a pound is made from the “low'* grade, the wholesale price of which is two cents a quart. Hubs is an Excellent Ffcipe ror Pickling Oysters.—Take 100 oysters fresh from the shell; scald them in thair own liquor; if not enough to keep them from burning, add a very little water. Then take the oysters and lay them on a platter to cool; strain the liquor through a mnsl n cloth; add to It a pint of the beet wbite-wine vinegar, one medinm-sized onion, chopped very fine, one ounce of pepper, the whole kernels, half an ounce of allspice, whole also, and half a teaapoorful of salt. Let theee boil for nve minutes. When cold strain it and pour over the oysters. Keep the saucepan covered while boil ing the vinegar anc spices, to prevent evaporation. Cover the jar or bottles in which you put the oysters. Tnese will keep for several weeks if put in a cool place. A boy with a top tried to spin it. But his hand got a thorn right in it, The sport didn’t spoil, For St. Jacob’s On, Cured his hurt in less than a minit. A red-haired clerk in Savannah, Slipped on a piece of banana, Great pain he endured, But St. Jacob's Oil cured, He now goes dancing with Hannah. Knit Wbatpkbs.—Everybody who cares for the sick knows how difficult it is to remove or to put on the knit wrap per; it seems as if the invalid needs to assume attitudes that would be almost impossible to one iu robust health; a half bourV work with needle and thread will b’lffloe to change a pair oi these garments and make them more comfor table, Gut them upen the entire length; then put on a facing on one side and a plait on the other; at proper intervals sew on some small porcelain buttons and make the buttonholes, and you will be surprised when this is accomplished that you never thought of doiag so be fore. Concerning cows and steers, the form of the leet is an indication of the nature of the place in wiich the animal has been reared. In stony regions the hoof grows round and wears away; c n the contrary, in soft, moist and marshy districts the hoofs lengthen and flatten out, and the same effect is produced by conflaement to the stable. The round hoof is a very desirable quality. Continued stall feeding renders the feet so tender that after some years the animal can take uo exercise, nor even com fortably travel over the pasture. The foot grows long and thick, and the creature is entirely unfitted for work or for driving to any distance. •/‘•Figures are not always tacts,” but the incontrovertible facts concerning Kidney-Wort are better than most figures. For instance: “It is curing everybody” writes a druggist. “Kidney-Wort is the most popular medicine we sell.” It should be by right, for uo other medicine has such epeciflc action on the liver, bowels and kidneys. Do not fail to try it. X&*rhe most brilliant shades possible, on all fabrics are made by the Diamond Dyes. Unequalled for brilliancy and du rability. 10 cents. The past season we tested many of the so-called temedies for the cabbage worm, among which were Int water, black pep per, saltpeter and some others. The three named proved quite unsatisfactory; the pepper and saltpeter produced no effect on the worms. The hot water destroyed part of them but also injured the plants. The most satisfactory application we tested was a mixture of one pound each of bard soap and kerosene oil, in three gallons ot water, applied with a watering pot. It is important to make application of any rem edy frequently or it will not prove entirely effectu&L Young worms are hatched daily, and the older ones are often so pro tected by the leaves that it is impossible to reach them with one application.” Professor Cook says that a carbolic soap wash has with him proved a very effectual preventive of radish maggots and apple- tree borers. His formula is as follows: To two quarts of soft soap I added 2 gallons of water; this was then heated to a boiling temperature, when the pint of carbolic acid (in a crude state) was added. This mixture is then set away m a barrel or other vessel, and is ready for use as occa sion may require. One part of this liquid is then mixed with fifty parts ot water and the plants sprinkled, or trees washed with it. This is worth remembering. To hake superphosphates on the prem ises the following recipe is given as excel lent, and within the range of almost every farmer: Take 100 pounds of ground bone place it in a large tub and apply forty pounds of sulphuric acid; adding water as desired, in a few days the whole will be reduced to the consistency of thick jelly. Then add more water aud about 300 pounds of plaster as a drier, the whole being worked and shoveled over until it can be readily manured. There will then be sufficient phosphate to apply to about 2} acres of land at a cost of about $7.60. I saw an old-fashioned, high- backed, cane-seated chair covered in serviceable fashion the other day. A sort of bag was made which exactly flitted over the chair. It was securely fastened at the bottom, the edges being turned in and sewed “over and over.” The covering was of Canton flannel of old gold color, and inserted in it were two stripes of cretonne. The cretonne had a black ground-work, with gay birds and flow ers on it For anything so simple and so easily made this chair covering was very effective, redeeming as it did an old and much-used chair from positive ugliness. There is hardly an adult person living but is sometimes troubled with kidney difficulty, which is the most prolific and dangerous cause of all disease. There is no sort ot need to have any form of kidney or urinary trouble if Hop Bitters is taken occasionally. A pretty scent sachet is of satin eight inches square; the top is of white satin with the initial of the owner worked in blue; the bottom is of blue satin, on which a small bunch of daisies is em broidered, There needs to be one thickness of cotton between the top and bottom, on which the perfume powder is scattered. The edge is trimmed with laee two inches wide, very full at the corners, and the lace has for a heading blue satin ribbons plaited in shells. For dyspepsia, maigestloa, depression of spirits and general debility, in their ra- rioua forms; also as a preventive against fever and ague and other intermittent fevers, the “Ferro-Phosphorated Elixir of Caluaya,” made by Caswell, Hazard & Co, New York, sold by all Druggists, is the best tonic; and for patients recovering from fever or other sickness, it has no equal. Thousands of persons are constantly troubled with a combination of diseases. Diseased kidneys and costive bowelf are their tormentors. They should know that Kidney-Wort acts on these or- cans at the same time, causing them to throw off the poieons that have clogged them, and so renewing the whole system.
