Mch 24-t*2w , 4 , —< r—c— The Season ok Pneumonia.—For forty years pneumonia has been a growing cause "of mortality in ihis Country, and it now ranks next tocoii- kumption in destructivetVess. It has been unusually prevalent this -yfcar, nnd March is the mouth in which it reaches its annual climax. Although not generally fatal among the young, It is one of the most deadly diseases With which the aged contend, and a prominent physician says that you can count on your -fingcls all triorc than seventy years of age who recover from its attack. Few people more than fifty years of age arc aiilb to withstand it. As a destroyer of distinguished men it has become conspicuous, and its fotafity among those who have passed tho meridian of life accounts foF the fact. Pneumonia is still a mysterious tiiSease^ and its origin is as much in <lispal«e as it was a quarter M a centu ry ago. Climatic changes undoubted ly affect it, but the condition of the person is more important than the condition of tlfe weather in regard to its assaults. A slight toid may speedi ly develop into malignant pneumonia in a person of dissipated habits, while the severest cold may not result in jmeumonia in A person of correct life And robust health. There is no dis ease which pays more respect And obedience to the laws of health than pneumonia. They who study and ob serve thogQ laws have little to fear from its ravages. Meanwhile, all fchould'bcar in mind that this is the Reason of pneumonia, >an<i therefore take especial precautions to protect themselves from cold*. —“We have only a few tons of Acid IPhosphate on hand. A 'fUrMtlB WITH A TRAMP. ./ The LITeTV Experience of A Gentleman on an Afternoon’s Rble-A Struggle with » Buffian, And a Narrow Escape. On last Monday afternoon Major Woodtfafd-, in company with Mrs. Woodward and Mr. Hesse, Cngi- ■ ncerin charge of the work on the rail road to tho granite qfcarry, started out in A carriage for a ride to the rocks. After riding some little distance, MAjor Woodward observed one of his dogs, Which had come along, approaching but of a piece of woods, with blood on its head, and seeming to have been shot. Alighting from the* vehicle, Major Woodward, with Mr. Hesse, •went into the woods whence the dog ha<f come. Before going very fir, .they came upon a t’efy harddooking tramp in very rusty clothes. Major Woodward charged him with shooting the dog, but he vehemently protested his innoebnee, nnd solemnly averred that he had no pistol about him. Xot accepting his statement, Major Wood ward and Mr. Hesse made a close search of his person, and, strange to Say, found no weapon! about him. Sfkey then led Mm to Hie road. Mr. Heath of Mr. John M. Frlpp. Mr. John M. Fripp, the father of Mrs. Chaplin and Miss Fripp, of this place, died on Monday night about nine o’clock. He had been in failing health for a very long time} and his dxath was not unexpected. Tlie fan* eral services WciT held in the Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon, con ducted by the Rev, T. W. MelHchatnp, and Ins remains were interred in tH3 Episcopal cemetery. Mi’. Fripp was sixty-seven years of age, and was a native of Beaufort dis^ trict, where he was before the war an extensive and successful planter. Driven from his homo by the Federal troops, on the fall of Fort Royal in 1861', he removed with his children to this place. His property was after wards sold by the United States au thorities under the infamous Direct Tax proceedings, and ho never re turned ro his did home—spending most of his life with his daughters in Winns boro. In this community, as lii every other where he was known, he en joyed universal e§lecm. Of a very retiring disposition, his contact with men was limited, yet sufficient to im press his chal-ac&r upon all. In every relation of life his record is without mar or blemish. He was in the thiesl sense of the term a gentleman—«a model of the Christian gcfitlcman. He was for ycaVs a member of the Baptist church, and enjoyed the fullest confi dence of his brethren. His standard of duty and of Hgtit was tho Chris-, tian standard; and no man, we may safely say, came bearer to its absolute fulfilment. The name he leaves be hind is imlecd that “good name which is better than riches”, and which will long remain to he honored by all who knew him. Peace to Ms ashes. A Monstrosity.—Fletcher M. Grant county, and by him represented Mf.. Uigbec, of Marion, Indiana. Though born alive, it^Tiily lived a short time. It has seven logs, two tails and a double mouth. From the head to six inches back of the neck it is perfectly natilrAl; except the dou ble mouth, but from that point the body divides, each half forming a com plete body with two le«:s and a tail, j The hind legs, although perfect in shape, all^ turn in different directions, j On tire middle of the back, jnst in front \ of ^vhere the bodies branch, is the seventh leg. the lower paft of which is very slender, but beyond the first joint it branches nnd forms two large, well- deVeloped feet. The bones in’this leg were so arranged as to make the feet stand several inches above the back. The month is abso a curious .malform ation, the bones in the louver jaw being placed in such a manner as to keep the. jaws apart two inches. To the end of Ihe lower jaw is attached another jaw of solid bone, which has a well-devel oped row of teeth growing on eafch side. This bone is placed in such a manner as to dose up the mouth. Mr. Noe made a carcftii dlssfccticfa o8f the body, which revealed the fSct. that from the neck back the creature had' two perfect backbones, and that each of .the bones in the various legs wgs URtuvaHy fastened to it.
