No subject affects ihore vitally the public weal than the cause of cdtica- tion; and bow its beneficent objects are bcsPlittUinable is the problem foremost and uppermost in the minds ef every intelligent and thoughtflf! citizen. Among all '(he numerous questions that present themselves upon the very threshold of the discussion, not tiic least among them is the employment of the teacher and what salary he should receive. Then if it becomes an imporUUit 'consideration in the education of the young to employ competent and efficient instructors, we submit, with all candor, that such can not be accomplished by a simple resort to cross-road harangues and high- sounding encomiums upon the benefits of ddlicafibh. The only substantial, senfiWe'niifl practical course to ptirsue is to offer salaries /wri/e^eiiough to In duce men of ability and character to take charge of the schools. We have often heard men reason that “there is wo use paying so much for teachers when so many oan be had cheaper; that twenty dollarsortwenty- five, or certainly thirty dollars, is p y enough", for it is more than most ot us can clear on efflr Wins.” Men who reason’in fins way forget the fact that it is skilled labor that thev are seeking, and they niust pftj for skilled labor as such.
