The Market UuVttlecf^Ar. L. Miur- nangh. Chapter Meeting—P. Landecker, Secretary. Loral Brlen. —On account of Lent It has been determined to postpone the masque rade ball tnttdl Thfesday evening, the 27th of March. —The passenger train on Friday was delayed about nine hours on ac count of an accident to the 'frcngtft train nrar Lexington. —Andy Alexander was brought be fore Justice Neil on Thursday under charge of selling liquor without a license. The evidence, however was iiot sufficient to establish a probable ’cause, and the Accused was promptly discharged. —Report reaches us that the presi dent of the B. P. U. has skipped with bag and baggage for the “state of mat- S’imbfiy.” We would like to indulge the hope that the report is false, but circumstances arc such that we cannot. There is, however, one chance for the old patriach yet—he may “get left.” —An inquisitive looking personage ’whom the people of this town know only too well, walking Wp f6 a group of gentlemen in front of the court house a few days ago, inquired: “May '1 ask if there is a scientific man among yon?” “Certainly,” replied a chorus of voices. “Well, then,” continued he, “kiudly explain to me this: The rain last night, as you know, was gen eral and heavy, raining all around, sirs, and not a drop fell in my garden.” One whistles, another feels in his Pockets, but all gradually move away, when the new-comer adds: “It may help you to a solution of the difficulty, gentlemen, to say just here that I have bo .garde 11.” I Fok thu Faumbbs.—Toward the end '«f each year, when accounts are being settled, many ignorant laborers find | Ticket* only *5 or pretend to find that the 'contracts between themselves and their employ ers are different from what they sup posed, and Ynnch dissatisfaction and trouble are the result. This might all be remedied by abiding by the provis ions of the following section of the Revised Statutes: Sue. '2081. All contracts made between pwnefs of land, their agents, administra tors, or executors, and laborers shall be witnessed by one or more disinterested persons, and at the request of eitber party, be duly executed before a Trial Justice whose duty it shall be to read and explain the same to the parties. Such contracts shall clearly set forth the conditions fipon which the laborer or laborers engaged to work, embracing the length of time, the amount of money to be paid, and when, if it be on shares of crops, what portion of the crop or crops. The Publie U rrqumteri carefully to notice the neu itn ’ enlarged Scheme to be draicn Monthly. BT'CAPITAL PttlZK, ■7ft.OOo Shares In Proporttoir. Another Bible Class.—The Rev. Frank Ilallatn has organized another Bible class in town, which at present consists of about fifteen members, with a prospect of considerable additions to that number. It meets every Thnrs- 'clay evening at Vb6 Episcopal church at 74 o’clock. All the young ladies and'gentlemen in town are especially invited to join. We Wish 4lr. Ilallatn much success. Louisiana State Lottery Company. “ We do htreJjy certify tluit vie supervise the arrangements fur all the Monthly and Semi-Annual Dnwings of The Louisiana State Lottery Company, and in person man age antf control the Drawings themselves, 'and that the same are conducted with hon- ‘esty, fairness, and in gSod faith toward all partus, and we authorize the Company to use this certificate, with fad-similes of our attached, initsadoertisements.” FOR THE Bitten bV a Mab Dog.—E. W. Nash, of Falrvfew, Greenville coftnty, reports that . Hear the old church last week the wife of James Savage was seriously hitlcM by a large dog belong ing to Mrs. Britt.’ The wound is quite serious, and it is not known yet wheth er Or not the animal was mad, but is tied awtfiting results.—News. —A true tonic medicine, a blessing In every household. SATISFACTORY PRICES 1 " - Small Grain.—Observant Fanners say that not more that! one-fourth of the areft, in small grain in this county fast year has been sown daring the pre-cht season. Th4 causes assigned are the large cotton crop, requiring aii the \itAe and labor for gathering it and the excessively inclement wealher. The condition of that sown is reported unfavorable—much of it oeing killed out by tl& intense continued cold weather. The short supply of this crop, for the feed of stock, will bo in great measure mrfAo ftp by the more tiftu average corn crop of last year. Honor to the Dead.—Pursuant to notice in our last issue the funeral ser vices of Capt. James Beaty were held at the Presbyterian church on last Thursday at twelvft o’cVocfc. The pall- boarei's were Messrs. J. C. Caldwell, Thomas Jordan, I. N. Withers, G. II. MteMaster, II. L. Elliott and Jas. H» Rion. The services w^re conducted by the Rev. D. E. Jordan. There was such an assemblage of people on that occasion as we have rarely seen be fore. The wealth, intelligence and culture of Winnsboro, the llurdy yeomanry of the country, rich and poor, all came to do honor to the lamented d£ad.
