Treasurer’s Repoiir—J. Q. Davis. k sslaitou— Winusboro Publishing Comp.. Local Brlea. —Young man, after yon have ad mitted that you don’t clearly under stand a subject, don’t say that nobody 'else does 'either. Let evcJy man at tend to his own acquirements. —Aft^r instituting a careful search we report that the worst thing in town is the streets and sidewalks. We sug gest that the town authorities take tho matter under advisement, and in sup port of our suggestion wo urge that the claims of this department upon the town treasury are second to noire. A writer once said “that the condition of the public highways is tho biSt test of Lie eivilzation of acountry. Wc think there is soiiAe truth in the observation. —Anything for fun! It seems fo be tip-top style now-a-days, at least in the Boro, to wire the gates when a young man venturis out calling. The 'object appears fo be to keep the caller from getting out, when lie oboe gets in. We really think Jhe ydoug men stay late enough any way, and there fore cannot beTiteVe as some do that the young ladies themselves are privy to it. We would suggest that a return to 'the old plan of imitation, cock-crowing might accomplish better results-. —A young m'dtthant in town has .just returned from the “City by the Sea.” He seems to have caught the Charleston fever for royalty, and they Buy that in ins ardor lie threatened “set up” to the “Princess,” forgetting that the Marquis had older claims. Wo assume that he lias been reading Bulwer of late. “I thought of tales that by the winter hearth Old gossips tell—how maidens sprung from k ngs Have stooped from their high sphere; how love, like death, Levels all ranks, and lays the sheplwrd’s crook Beside the sceptre.” The Biule Ci.ass.—The Rev. D. E. Jordan has organized a large atid very interesting Bible class, numbering over thirty young ladies and gcntle- inen. It meets every Sabbath evening at the Presbyterian clinrch at 34 b’clock. Young people of all denomi nations arc invited to join. PtensoNAL.—MH». Bell and her daughters are on a visit to friends and relatives in town. We wish them a pleasant stay. Miss Maggie Marion, of Chester county, is also in the Boro on a visit. We feel sure thaf she will return home with pleasant impressions of our littlo town. The sad intelligence reached me a few flays ago of the sudden and unexpected fleath 6f that beloved and gentle lady, Mrs. P. C. MellIchami*, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Mobley. The Great Shepherd took her to himself January 17, 1883, in the twenty-second year of her age. Her remains were interred in the family burying-ground at the hotof of fier youth. Mrs. Mellichamp, aS a woman, had few hquals. Hers was a character made up of v So much that the human heart appreciates —so kind, so gentle, 86* pure, that none knew her who did not feel the influence of hepgoodness. At home; the jdndn^ss of her amiable disposition was felt by hus band, kindred and friends;' while abroad " She moved with that same winning grace which endeared her to ell.. But she is gone. Little effd I think when f last saw her, that the cold embrace of Cliy ruthless arms, O Death! would so soon snatch away our friend, and leave us to mourn ouf Joss. My sadness is inexpressible when I reflect on the many happy days we spent together in ciiildJiOWl wandering through the fields, gathering Wild flowers, and lis tening to the merry-singing birds. The spring with its birds and flowers .that she loved so Well will come, but, alas!" we will not see her gentle face. The summer, too, will come with its hours of gladness, but Abe wil! not he With us to mike brighter oursunshine.- “God in riiercy guarded thee’ With n£fer ceasing love,-. , And Iftl fltee frdih this sinful world,- To thy sweet home above.” “ T take fills gont'.o one,’ said He, ‘And lay her in my’.breast; Protection she shall And in me in me be ever blest’ ” Served the DentVat Rie-ht.” — badly that he couldn’t sleep ... night He had inflicted so much pain on other people, in pulling and mending their teeth, that they thought it would be good for him to suffer a little himself. The leading dentist of Portsmouth, N. H., Pain is and has relieved him self from tlie twinges of neuralgia by the Pkrry Davis’s Pain Killer.
