Frank llallam on Tuesday night delivered at the Trinity Church Guild, Columbia, a lecture on the life and writings of Thomas Carlyle, of which the Yeoman speaks as follows: The lecture last night at Guild Ilali by the llev. Afr. Ilallam, on the life and writ ings of Thomas Carlyle, wa« listened to for an hour iuid more by » small hut select and appreciative audience. The lecture was, in every way, a most chasto and finished production, and the speaker’s manner, matter and style held the undivided att-n- tion of the audience throughout. Ho be lieves Carlyle to have been a gfoat and good man, among the greatest, perhaps, of Ills day, and although evidently enamored of his subject, yet the faithful portrait was not overdrawn. The analysis of character was both able and impartial, and the rough and somewhat uncouth Scotch writer and essayist was made to stand before the de lighted audience in all his grand and capti vating proportions—a man among men and above them. He was thoroughly original and in advance of his age, and that was what enlisted the opposition and de nuncic- tion with which he was met at every turn. He was bold and stem in his bearing and demeanor, yet none the less gentle pathetic. The mind struggles to to Thoinds H'. Davis, 8i m psou’a. tow nshi p; $875. July 8,1880. Josephine N. Ladd to Jno.
