It is verv rare that a man undergoes Mr. Wheel er’s experience. At the beginning of the Forty-seventh Congress Air. Wheel er, a little gray-whiskered, short- haired man, toddled up to the clerk’s desk and held up his hand to be sworn in. Mr. Calkins objected to the swear ing in of Wheeler, and lio stepped aside. Later he was sworn in, tlie objection having been a more form ality, and he took his seat. The con tested election case of Lowe vs. Wheeler came opiate in the session, the committee reporting in favor of Lowe. Several non-elected Represen tatives had already been sent to the right about, and Mr. Wheeler amused the House by tho philosophy with which Ikj accepted the evident decree of fate by clearing his desk of his pri vate papers the day before his case came up When the contested ejection case of Wheeler vs. Lowe was called up he sot half a day and listened to the speeches, then climbed into a chair before the Speaker’s desk and made an eloquent effort in his own defense, climbed down, took his hat and lett tin: lion ,0 without waiting for the vote w!.i<'l( unseated him, and never went near the House again. Late this fall, previous to tho election, poor Lowe ue d, and a special election was called. Wheeler ran on the Democratic ticket and was elected, and to-day lie toddled Again to the front of the clerk’s desk, and for the second time took tho oath of office as a member of tho Fortv- scveuih Congress.
