We assombled at the German Artillery Hall on Went worth St. to receive instructions, knapsacks, etc. We were com smanded by the lamented J. (ohnston Pettigrew. We march ed down meeting to Broad St. thence to Boy ce's Wharf. where we boarded thE steamer for Cas tle Pinckney. We found the fort all quiet and serene, it ha*ing been evacuated the night before. But now the sad part 1 of that trip. Mr. Robert Holmes was corporal of the guard. On, his relief was challenged of the guard, who brought his gun to a charge and fi-.ed, killing poor Holmes instantly. He undoubt edly was the first man killed in in the War. The next morning we took fort Moultrie, found it too had been left to its fate by i Anderson. We were next or dered to Morris Island and were stationed near the gun that was fired at the Star of the West. Mr. G. E. Hayneworth, a Cita del Cadet at the time, fired the guu.
