member of the Carolina Light
Infantry of Charleston, S. C.
we were ordered into Camps af
ter the Ordinance of Secession
#assed. We assombled at the
German Artillery Hall on Went
worth St. to receive instructions,
knapsacks, etc. We were com
smanded by the lamented J.
(ohnston Pettigrew. We march
ed down meeting to Broad St.
thence to Boy ce's Wharf. where
we boarded thE steamer for Cas
tle Pinckney. We found the
fort all quiet and serene, it
ha*ing been evacuated the night
before. But now the sad part 1
of that trip. Mr. Robert Holmes
was corporal of the guard. On,
his relief was challenged of the
guard, who brought his gun to a
charge and fi-.ed, killing poor
Holmes instantly. He undoubt
edly was the first man killed in
in the War. The next morning
we took fort Moultrie, found it
too had been left to its fate by i
Anderson. We were next or
dered to Morris Island and were
stationed near the gun that was
fired at the Star of the West.
Mr. G. E. Hayneworth, a Cita
del Cadet at the time, fired the
guu. I saw him pull the trigger.
I'could give you a few more in
cidents, but will not weary you
further now."
