'THE TULTIT. A SCHOLARLY SUNDAY SERMON BY THE REV. ST. CLAIR hESTER. Subject: "Church and Family." Brooklyn, N. Y.-The RIv. St. Clair IHester, rector of the Church of the Messiah. prenevhed the fourth sermon in the spechil series uler the aus pices of the Men's (lil(d Sunday. His subject was "The Church and the Family." The text was from Ephe sians v:25: "Christ loved the church and gave Ilminseli for it." Mr. Hester said: It is evident to any one reading te accounts of the life and words of Jesus Christ while on this earth that it was His desire and purpose to found a so iety to represent IHiim, to preserve His memory, to make known and carry out His will. His mission was not intelnd ed to be meteoric in character-flash across the horizon of man's vision-as tonish and puzzle by means of miracles and wonders, and then disappear. leaving the. darkness as it was before He cale. His coining and being in this world was intended to make and ictually (lid make a difference. a great lifference, in the views :Vnd hopes and motives and lives of those who caine under His influence. And He planned :hat the moment He inaugurated the ivork He started, should not come to nd when Ie withdrew from the aorld. and was no longer present in the flesh to direct and superintend its ?teision. Furthermore, it was in His ind that His society was not only to -otinue. but also to grow. to enlarge. antil it should be w'orld-wide. until all :ien should have opportunity to enter ts ranks. Therefore it is that we find EIlu solemnly addressing His disciples ind declaring that upon their con ressed faith in Him as the Son of God, iaving power to phn and execute as sod, He would build His church and that the gates of hell, the comb'ied ?owers of evil, should not prevail zgainst it. They have combined igainst it and attacked it again and igain, they are still in bitter opposi ion to it, but there is no sign of yield St. Paul says: "Christ loved the yhurch." What is the proof. the evi kence, that this assertion is true? He tounded and established it-a man does not build a house unless le thinks that ,t will be worth something. He se ected and trained and appointed otli eers to be His successors and as His ?arting instructions bade ther go into ill the world and preach His gospel to ?very creature. He instituted and or lained sacraments as pledges of His ove, as continual reminders, as means y which the souls of the faithful night be fed and refreshed. Finally. is St. Paul says, He gave Himself for t; as St. Luke says, He purchased it nith His own blood. This is an abso ute, conclusive demonstration. Great r love hath no man than this that lie ay down his life for his friends, and his is what He did for His church. Oh, yes, He loved it: of this there are nany and infallible proofs. But how tbwt ourselves-7'xr love, yours and nine? It suffers by comparison? Can rour feeling for the church of God be lescribed by any such words as love? is it not the truth that there is indiffer mce, cold, callous indifference, on the art of many and positive disbelief and >pposition on the part of many others n their attitude toward the church? Any one pf us could name a dozen ii ustrations of it. We must admit it. housands never enter a sacred edifice. Dther thousands only occasionally as riosity or whim moves them. The church is the institu ion, the organization of Jesus Christ s it putting it too strong to say that o0 reject it is to r'eject Him? People vho think or act in this way do not r'e iect or they do not realize the benefit tad blessing Christianity is to a coun :ry or thme church to the family. And next let me ask tor what is the family under obligation to the church? She throws the arns of her protection about the divine institlttion of mar riage, making it, and to the extent of her ability. keeping it pure, honorable, indissoluable. She frees and uplifts woman from the bonda,ge and degre (ation which are accepted as the law of her being in heathen and Oriental lands, and teaches that as wife and mother she is deserving of the best ad vantages, of especial consideration. of highest reverence and purest affection. She preaches the divineness of child hood, that the wisest and greatest must become as a little child in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven: that the care, the education, the moral training of the rising generation is that first duty of the parent, the chief concern of the state, the vital self preservation of society. She gives ' herself earnestly and unreservedly to this cause. declaring that "honor thy father and thy mother" is a divine tommandment, that "children obey your parents" is sanetioned by the pre cept and example of the Perfect Man of the ages. She communicates a spir it and sends forth a cheer that blesses the home and pervades the domestic sphere and harmonizes the hearts of those who form the household. These things, taken altogetner. would seem to be enough to dispose all men to be favorable to this ancient and honorable and useful institution. Jesus Christ established it: had the highest possible idea of its worth; gave His life in proof of it; as an organization it is the greatest producer of goodness and all virtue on the earth: it enters into and sweetens and sanctities every human relationship; its history proph esies that what it has done in the past it can continue to do in the future, and yet there is bitterness and resent ment felt toward it. Why? Because many do not appreciate the reasons just named for thinking highlly of it, for joining in with it. Does anyo!e here to-night share in this dislike? What is there in the church - of God you object to? If there be nothing. you are without reason or excnse for being on the outside. COMMISSIONER CARFIELD'S REPOF It Is Found to Be Favorable to the Gre Packers. The report of Commissioner of Cc porations Garfield on the beef indu try, after about eight months' invc tigation In Chicago aid elsewhei shows that there has been an enormo amount of exaggeration in the stai ments that have appea -ed for son time past in regard to Ihe beef bu: ness. This investigation was set i foot by a resolution of the House representatives adopted March 7, 19( and the ascertained facts after a mc rigid examination of the methods al general conduct of the business a contained in a report covering 3 pages. Its figures and tables cone sively show that the popular belief enormous profits made by the lar packers, such as Armour & Co., Sw & Co. and Nelson Morr.s & Co., at In the exclusive control of the bu ness which many think they enjoy, really without foundatio 2. The report made to Pr ?sident Rtoo< velt. by Commissioner Girfield is re. ly t', first official statement of the tual conditions of the beef busine that has been made, and is all the c clusions arrived at are br sed, as shov by him, upon data officially obtaine there seems to be no reF son why th should not be regarded a s reliable ai in all respects trustworthy. This report shows wh; the price both cattle and beef advanced to t highest level ever known after t short corn crop of 1901, nnd states th because of the decrease in numuber cattle and also in decreased weig: "the high prices of beef which caus so much complaint amcng consume at this time were attrit utable1 whol to these abnormal cattle prices." All the figures of the live weight al live cost of all dressed beef cattle we obtained from actual killing recor< and all information of every kindc taned by the Commissioner was vol taily and freely offered by the pac ers, all books of record and pape connected with the business havi: been placed at his disposal. To make certain that. the results the investigation should be absolute accurate, the Commissioner states th a double method of ascertaining prof was adopted, .and, without going iri detail here, it is found that the cone' sion arrived at shows an averago, pro of 99 cents per head. The Comm soner says "the close parallelism the results of the two methods of certaining the profits confirms col pletely the correctness of the gener conclusions." It Is clearly establish' that 'Western packers do not conti more than half of the beef supply the United States," the conclusion the Commissioner being that the bu: ness5 done .by them amounts to "abo 45 per cent." of the total slaughter the country. The whole report is extremely inti esting and well worthy of careful y rusal. As an official report it may regarded as worthy of confidence, al it certainly leads the reader to t: conclusion arrived at by the Commi sioner when he states that "the ca: talization of none of these concerns excessive as compared with its actu Investment," and that from thoroua and rigid examination of original e tries In books and papers to which:] had access there was also "indirect el dence that the profits of the packe in their beef business are less than frequently supposed," as shown comparison between the total profi and the total amount of sales.
