Just md receivea ai aiwix^ TO THE PUBLIC. In consequence of an unfortunate occurrence a which recently took place at the South Cnroli- r na Female Institute, the undersigned, friends { of that institution, are apprehensive that serious injury will bo done to it unless tiie public are I f properly inlormed of the facts. The interest j r we feel in this excellent institution, of which, v we think, the State has reason to he proud, together with our desire to do justice to Dr. Elias Marks its woi-thv niincin.-il. (:i irentleniai) who ' v * "** I 1 ?' \? r? has for tho last forty years been favorably J: known to the people of this and the adjoining States as a teacher of young ladies,) has promp- I ted us to make the following brief statement to ; _ the public: We believe the affair has been very much ; exaggerated; but how far the improprieties f spoken of were carried we are not prepared to say. We deem it sufficient, however, to state that, in our judgment, Dr. .Marks was in 110 1 wise to blame; that from the tirst intimation he received of the affair he has acted with the proper feeling, and properly rid himself and the ' institution of both the parties charged with of- ' feuding; that he has shown 110 disposition to screen either of the offenders, or conceal their imprudence or indiscretion from the public ; the has afforded every facility in bis power but to thorough investigation of the affairs, although lie was thereby doing himself a serious pecuniary injury. VVe further beg leave to state that as the of fending parties have been removed, and as tlie i_ institute is row under the "sole and exclusive management of Dr. Marks and his experienced lady, we consider that all ju>t ground ui ohjec- j ^ tion to the institute has been removed, and that ; 1 .L:~ .... . 1.1 WO reijaru II HI mis ui;:c nuiiivmu i the support and patronage of the* public. We farther state that wo have reason to tear i ' I that unless the friends of the institute step forward to sustain it, it will he destroyed, to the i great detiiment of the pooj le of this ."'late.
