C., of humble im rents He attnnilml BreWS r Normal institute and at an early age was compelled to stopand help support his parents; because of this, very early he was apprenticed in the trade of carpentry. Though ho was very yimng he became deeply inter- \ ested in his church; having been organist and served in other capacities. As he progressed in his trade, he worked in several towns?.Decatur, Albany and Atlanta, Ga. "While working, in Albany, Ga., he met and married Miss Delia E. Watson in 1903. To this union were born tour children; two of1 which survive: Mrs. Beatrice Mc-J Ghee Williams of Atlanta, Ga.;' an 1 William Madison McGhee, Jr.,' in business in Aiken, S. C. I He came to Aiken many years ago, where he' and his cousin A.1 B. McGhee went in business together as contractors and builders. They were the first contrac-1 tos o fany race in Aiken. General Embrich states over 2,500 former soldier residing in this Corps Area have enlisted for this newest componet of our National Defense, and, of 650 soudiers recently returned from the Panama Cpnal Department- for discharge from the Regular Army, approxi mately 350 have expresssed their Army Reserve and become "Modern Minute Men!'-in. the - military i forces of the United States. It might be mentioned that as superintendent. he was neither late nor absent as log as he served. To his church, he cotributed largely of his means. Educationally, he was interested in institutions for the development of Negro youths. At one, time, he was a trustee of Allen' university, Columbia, to which, school, he contributed freely. Fraternally he served as brig-' adaire. general-of the Knights of' Pythias for several years and was a Mason of thethirty-second degree. He was civic-minded, doing what he could to help better the economic, social and political sta-j tus of his race and his community. He was well thought off by members of both races, young and old as was attested by the many floral designs and telegrams and other services of sympathy. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Delia Watson McGhee; a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice McGhee' Williams; one son, W. M. Mc-j Ghee, Jr.; three grand-children;' three sisters, four bothers and a| host of relatives and friends. He was born on December 25,' i 188G. Strickened December 25,' 1 1 7, and died December 25, 1938.' I LEEDS NEWS A birthday super was given Saturday night, March 25 for Mrs. Sallie Frederick, morther cff Mrs. Mattie Owens at her home. Mrs. Frederick was 74 years old and has more than 30 grand-children and quite a few great-grand-child ren with most of them present. The hostess served baked chicken, stew, potato salad on lettuce, crackers, cake, fruit s alad and ice tea. The table was decorated beautifully with the "varied^colored cakes and flowers. After the supper was over Mrs. Owens had Mrs. Sallie Frederick seated at the head of the table and opened the presents. She received many love ly gifts of-which she was very grateful.
