THE UNION TIMES. M. TV. CULP, - - Editoi:. NOTICE. All correspondents of Tije Times will pleuse send in their communications by Monday of each week if it is possible. By ail oversight the name of 1). B. Fant was omitted from the list of candidates last week. M essrs. W. A. Nicholson and A. H. Foster attended the veterans rc-union in Charleston last week. Hands are very scarce about Union 200 more hands could find employment. The Tinners will complete the root of the largest factory in fcouth Carolina this week. Every person must remember the inectingg of the Democratic clubs and attend the same: Every voter should get his registration certificate. Your old one is worthless. Bring your poll tax receipt. Something has broken about the machinery lor boating the artesian well, and w ill cause a delay of a few days. Our old esteemed friend uncle Bob Ray, of Cross Keys, came back from Charleston all bedecked with budges etc., and delighted w ith his trip. We hope undo Bob will live to attend many more reunions. Mayor John A. 'Fant wants to j#in the Red Men but is afraid he will be scalped. 11. M. Grintball intends joining the Red men as soon as he learns to sfeak the Indian language. James E. Hunter returned from New York on Tuesday last. Ilis trip was a strictly business trip. He is now State aitent for the National Life Association of Hartford, Conn. Jim, like the town of Union, has got a new move 011 him. AH of the old veterans that went to Charleston secincu to havo had a delightful time. They were hospitably treated, as Charleston knows how to do, and they enjoyed it. It seems to us, as the vets grow older that these reunions would become more pleasant. They meet next time in Greenville.* The man writing the letter on our first page is namcdE. Gestand seems to hold a good position at Reno, Nevada. From his letter heads he is vice president, custodian and manager of the Nevada, California and Oregon Railway. lie io undoubtedly related to the Gist of this county. Our Streets Need Improving. 'Hie council has commenced to re pair the streets. The hands are now working the street from the Racket store to the Presbyterian church. Mr. Rurkett is the superintendent and, seems to be doing good work. J he council slionhl next work the .street running from the couit house to Mrs. McNally s, and then lix(Jrog street from Main street to I>r. J. E, Ciiarncr'e. Tiiesc streets arc growing daily of importance. There arc some nice building lots on these streets, and by working the streets, these lots will be improved and he in demand. When the council gets in ? condition financially Main strcel dkoull he thoroughly worked Iron the court house to Tosches branch Every dollar you spend gentletnei ori the streets is well spent. Tin council should open new streets when necessary and stiaighteii the old ones Each day you wait will add to tin cost, because properly is advancing every day. A city is judged by it: streets just as a country is by it! nublic roads. 1 ? ? . # . Matting! malting! mailing! ATEIPTO CA2USLE On last Tuesday morning we concluded to visit tin* thriving town of Carlisle, by private conveyance. In the company of a friend, we left t'nioii at 0 o'clock and arrived at Carlisle at 1? o'clock. All along the road we found that the farms had been hard at work, and nearly all h.ul their crops planted. The farms cvvmed to have been more thoroughly managed and lit better condition than we ever saw them ;;t this time of the year. T! The court was still in session when v.vlcfi. Carlisle is quite a thriving town. It has splendid railroad 'facilities. and i* surrounded l?ya splendid farming country. The city fathers have liad a liumb.T of street lamps pul up and riiade many improvements in their streets. They have laid out a nuinlter of stnrts elear through the enrporate limits; running north ami south and east and west. On oncof the prettiest lots in the town, the Baptists have nearly eompleted a very neat church made out of the best lumlier we ever saw. The lumUar eame from the Augusta Milling Company, (ta. The design of t!?e church is somewhat different from any we have ever seen, and is very pretty. It is tiftv feet in length by thirty feet in width. A splendid spring is ver\ close to the church. There is talk of the people of Chester and the is'ople of t uion having a joint picnic at Carlisle soon. We hoi>e i they will. Mr. J no. J). iSmith is build: ing a nice residence for the purpose of renting. He informed us that a uumlier of good people wanted to move to Carlisle if they could get houses, lie also said if things moved on smoothly next fall he thought the citizens of Carlisle and the surrounding country would get up some mill enterprise. Kveryoue is praising Mr. I leaver as a hotel proprietor. We exjK-ct much improvement in Carlisle before long, as imie-tenths of her citizens are young, wide-awake and progressive citizens. We left Carlisle at 4 o'clock in iheafternoon, drove to iSanluc and took tlx* InU'W I'lUlfl 111 I'oinli :ivi \\/> unnliul to sec tliat part of the county. On that road we also found that the i?oople had been at work and had their farms in tine .condition. We also found new, and a better class of houses going up. Some parties were thining out cotton on this road. .IcIT Jimiton was sitting down in the field doing nothing as usual, andlook; cd happy.
