WEDNESDAY, APRIL IO, 1907. The Sumter Watchman was founded in I860 and the True Southron in ?866. The Watchman and Southron now bas the com brned circulation and influence of both of She oii papers, and is manifestly the best advertising medium in Sumter. IMPORTANT NOTICE. Subscribers are requested to ex? amine the' label on their papers, which show the date to which the subscription has been paid. Those Who find that they are in arrears are ?requested to call and settle or re'mit .at the earliest convenient date. The amount that each subscriber owes is ?mail, but in .the aggregate the amount due us for subscription is <?_i?.^. tillie-said \?e -lcd tlic ricr~y President Roosevelt may succeed in nominating himself for the presi? dency if he keeps up the present racket, but he should not hope to convince all the people that he does not want another term. If actions speak louder than words he wants another term and means to have it. * *' * The pardon of Dr. Maxcy Gregg Lee, of Darlington county, who was serving a life term in the penitentiary for the murder of his father, was to nave been expected. The only re? markable fact connected with the case is that he was not pardoned sooner. Th|s thing of imprisonment for life is more fiction than il is fact, provided the prisoner does not . in? considerately die on short notice; for given a little time, it is comparatively easy to find an excuse for the ex? ercise of the pardoning power. Engagement Announced. Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Powell an? nounce the engagement of their daughter, Erluth Lea, to the .Rev. Thaddeus Bowman Epting, of Sum? ter, S. C., the marriage to occur on the afternoon of Thursday, April 18, at one o'clock at Holy Trinity Church, cards for which interesting event will be issued tomorrow. Miss PoweU is a young woman whose sweet and lovable nature and charming womanly manners have made her very cordially beloved not ! ?only among her own friends but all -who knew her even slightly and it ^is a source of very general regret that "lier marriage will of necessity remove lier from their midst. The Rev. Mr. Epting is well-known j In Augusta, where he has frequently I .??s?ted and where he has made many cancere ana loyal mends by his very '."superior qualities and his frank na? ture and strong mentality. Mr. Ept lng has frequently filled the pulpit of Holy Trinity church and is a min? ister of most pronounced ability. He will be the recipient of countless congratulations upon this announce? ment, which will, however, be learn? ed of with as deep regret by the friends of the dainty bride-to-be. .Augusta Herald, March 31. Harmony Presbytery. The spring meeting of Harmony Presbytery convened with the Presbyterian Church of this city on Tuesday, April 9th, at 12m. At the request of the retiring moderator, Rev. J. C. Bailey preached the opening sermon. The following mem? bers are expected to preach at the time named: Tuesday evening-Rev. H. A. Knox. Wednesday morning-Rev. H T. Darnall. Wednesday evening-Rev. Hugh R, Murchison. Thursday evening-Rev. W. J. Wyly. Dr. T. M. McConnell has been ap? pointed by Presbytery to remain over the Sunday after the meeting and preach. All of the sessions of the Presbytery are open to the public and every member of the church is earn? estly urged to attend as many ses? sions as possible. Letter to T. C. Scaffe, Sumter, S. C. Dear Sir: Here's a tale with a point to it. Florida is the hardest state iu the Union for it. Gilmore & Davis Co, Tallahassee, Florida, think they know paint can do in their climate; they've been painted for 35 years, Devoe ten years ; and they say Devoe wears 10 years their words aro: "Buildings we paint? ed Devoe 10 years ago are in good con? dition of paint tod y. " They also say lead and-oil wears only ene year there; Devoe 10 years! Ten years is a long lifetimr for paint in Florida; longer thau 20 In Maine. We dors't dare say that either is true as a general fact in those States; but there are such instances. If we should call the cost o? Devoe in Florida half of the usual cost of paint, it would be too much: we sup? pose it's about o^e third ; there is ?o much trosh there-the costliest paint is the worst, and the worst is tbe costliest everywhere. Yours truly -58 F W DEVOE & CO P. S. Durant Hardware Co.- sell ur paint. BITTEN BY A MAD CAT. Mr. T. J. Geddings, of Privateer, At? tacked by a Gat That Probably Had Hydrophobia. Mr. T. J. Geddings, of Privateer, was attacked Wednesday by a house cat and seriously bitten on the hand. The cat made two attacks on him, but was beaten off the first time be? fore it succeeded in biting" him. The second time it succeeded in fastening itself to his hand and inflicted a pain? ful wound. The actions of the cat indicated that it had . hydrophobia and rt was killed. The head was sent by express last night to the Pasteur Institute for examination, Report of County Supervisor of Sumter County. S.
