Dreher returned to their home at Sel wood, S. C.? this morning, after spending a week with Mrs. Dreher's brother, Mr. J. L. Nunnamakei, on Wright's Street, Mr. Dreher Is a brother of Mr. Wm. C. Purdy, of Sumter, who is presiding over the January term of court here, today frwarded to Gov. Ansel his resignation as judge of the third ju? dicial circuit of South Carolina, ef? fective September 1. Judge Purdy is very popular in Laurens and the bar unitedly ex? press regret over his decision to re? tire from the position which he has filled with eminent ability for five years, having been re-elected for his second term last winter. McFad- | din, of Concord, had a narrow escape j from a serious accident on Main street. He was proceeding down Main street in his buggy, and just as he neared the corner of Bartlette street an automobile came up behind him at a high rate of speed and as it whizzed by struck one rear wheel of the buggy and almost upset it Fortu? nately the horse did. not take fright I and no serious damage was done the buggy. On January 9, 1907, at 5.30 p. m., at the home of the bride, near Her? iots, S. C., by Rev. John C. Bailey, Mr. John T. Green and Miss Lillie A. McCutchen, daughter of the late John A. McCutchen. Mr. Stanyarne Burrows and Miss Julia, daughter of Mrs. Guignard Richardson, were married at St. Philip's church, Bradford Springs, at 3.30 o'clock this afternoon, Wednes? day, January 16th, Rev. John Ker? shaw, Jr., performing the ceremony. DEATH. Mrs. S. L. Turner died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. X. Seaye, in Columbia, on Wetfneday night, the <jth instant, aged SI years. The body was taken to Charleston, Mrs. Turn? er's former home, and the interment i w*s made in the Magnolia cemetery i Friday. Mrs. Turner was the grand? mother of Mrs. John T. Green and 1 Miss Mary Hughson of this city. Mrs. M. D. Rose died at her home on North Harvin street, t-?? city, on .Sunday, Jan. 6th. Mrs. Rose left a little daughter just four weeks old. Hemphill Pate, the eldest son of Mr. W. H. Pate, died Sunday after? noon at his father's home, after an illness of about two months. He was just 27 years old, and until he devel? oped Bright's disease a few months ago was the picture of health and vig? orous young manhood. During the last few weeks of his illness he suffered intensely and when death came it was a welcome relief from the agony he endured. The funeral was held at 4.30 this afternoon. Special Election for Jndge of Probate Will Be Held February 19th. Columbia, Jan. 10.-The governor today ordered an election in Sumter county to be held on February 19, next, to fill the office of judge of pro? bate, made vacant by the death of the incumbent, Col. There were only a few friends of the contracting parties present. Mr. Toomer holds a position with the Pinewood Mercantile company, and Miss Caldwell is from Campbello, S. C., and was assistant teacher here in the academy. They have the best wishes of their many friends.
