The passenger train No 33, leaving this ci'v at 4 "9 a. m. for Augusta, via the Man cbestert t Augusta R. R. was wrecked at 4." -ay morning at a point 5 miles fron. 4 city. The traio consisted of Engine 313, mail, express aod baggage cars, one second-class coach and first-class day conch and the Pull? man Sleeper Shannoo Eogio^r Jim Hous? ton was io charge of the engin.-, ?nd Conduc? tor Johnson had charge of the traio. There were thirty-five passengers on the train, the number being d.stributed among the three coaches. Amone the number were Mr. J. F. Pate and Mr. C. Weston Mc Grew, of thia city, the latter one of the printers employed on The Daily Item. Hon J. William Stokes, member of Con? gress from the 7tb District, ard wife, were passengers on the Pullman, being en route to their home in Orangebure from Washington. There were also on board the train the fol? lowing members of the Sith Massachusetts regiment going to Ft. McPaersen, Atlanta : David Riley, Geo. Malvin Thomas A Kel? ly, Thoa J McGuire, David J Davis, Jae. P Green, Thoa F. Crane and C. L Nutter. The wreclc occurred about one mile beyond the trestle orer Old Ford Swamp abd near Cain's Mill, in a cut just after the track leaves a high embankment that carriesy*he t<-ack across gully. . The heavy ram last night filled this gully and the adjacent low ground between tbe bills on either side full ro over? flowing, as the small culvert under the em bankmeat, at the deepest part of the 'gnliy, waa too small to carry off the unusual vol? ume of water that bad accumulated The water backed op alongside tbe track and at tbe very spot tbe cut begins washed out tbe track to a depth of aboui two feet for a dis? tance of about twelve or fifteeo feet. The front trucks of the engine got across tbe washout without leaving tbe rails, but the track sunk beneath the weight of the engine and the driving wheels left the rails and the trucks of the tender followed The track was toro up and the rails bent and twisted out o? shape. The ttucks of the I mail, baggage, express, secopd and first class coaches were wrenched off and jammed against the side of the cot The coupling between the tender and the expreis car parted after the train bad been dragged over the demolish? ed track a distance a little greater than the length of the traio and all of the coaches were left lying against the side of the cut. The engine and tender ran abont ote hundred yards before being stopped, the front trucks of the en gin- did not leave the truck at all, but tbe driping wheels and the trucks of the ?ender bumped across the cross ties, knocking ooe rail out of place ali tbe way from the point where tb* coaches were left in the di ch against tbe side of the cuT. The dnn age to the coaches was not great and the Pullman sleeper suffered least of all E ap meer H ons'on stock to his engine until be brought it to a stand ; and the fi reran says be did not jump, bu after it was all over be was found standiog on tbe top of tbe side of the cut. Tbe passengers were severely shaken op, and m*oy of them teceited bruises ?od c n tueioos fro coming into sudden and violent contact with tbe seats and sides of the coach? es, nut none of them were seriously wounded. Mr J F Pate of this city was the greatest .offerer, receiving severe brnises io the side and back Dr L Hursey, of Warsaw, N. C., was se? verely bruised and bis back was slightly in? jured, but be was able to go on to bis des? tination on the Columbia train at 9 3?, a. m A reiief train was dispatched to the wreck aa soon as the news reached this city, and all the passengers were brought here for break? fast and then sent oo to their destination via Colombia, on tbe regular traio, at 9.3V The wrecking train arrived from Florence at?8 30 a m and went through to the wreck, and a large force of bands under the direc tlon of Tra:nmaster Lynch, w*s pai to work to clear the track. It was found impossible to remove the wreck ge from tbe "tine io time to clear tbe track for tne resumption of traffic that evening, abd while a. portion of the force was at work on tbe wrecked coaches and rt isa bled engine, another sang built a track around the wreck to permit tbs passage of tra os The wreck causes a heavy lo*s to she AtUn tic Coas? Line on account of the damage to the track, engine and coaches, but the fact that no lite was lott and thai th* passengers escaped with such trifling injuries is suffi? cient to counterf-alance the financial lo-*. That tbere were not numerous fatalities is re? markable aod the passengers made a oost lucky and fortunate es-ape D?ring tbe morning ^quite a rnmbpr of people rode out to the sceue of tbe wreck oo wheels, but it is the universal verdict of all who went that the sight was not worth the trip. -???-aa Alumni Beiseption.
