J. China. Tile Sooth and Cuba. Mr. Editor: Io view of passing events manyat oar patriotic southern soldiers have caught the spirit of our southern senators and representa ti ves in congress and have tendered their services to the President of the United States. And should the slo gan of war resound to arms every Southern State would do her whole duty now as promptly and spontane? ously as in 1812 against England, or in 1846 against old Mexico, or in 1851 against the North. Of this type is Gen. Joseph Wheeler, of Confederate cavalry fame, and M. J. Jenkins, son of a gallant Confederate patriot and officer who fell on the field of battle, a native Sooth Caroli nian, who tell President McKinley they are ready oo telegraphic notice Also hundreds of volunteers, both organized and unorganized, ready to march against the treacherous Span iard whose hatchery pf helpless wo? men and children of the brave Co bans whom they cannot conquer, has been equaled only by their own cowardice and treachery io the de enaction of a man of war and crew of a friendly nation while anchored, as they supposed, under the protec? tion of their murderers Now the question presents itself to the South "shall we volunteer aid to the Fede? ral government against Spain ?" Shaking for myself, I doubtless ut*, ter, the sentiment of ninety nine hundredths of the Southern States I, like many others, gave four years of my life to the cause I cherished dearer than life. D?ring that loog eeige of carnage I never received a furlough. I looked then upon the soldier in blue as an enemy whom I bad sworn to kill, and adopted the pdict of my noble racking officer. N B. Forrest, that "War means fight, and fight means to kill," but when peace was declared, the war ended J accepted the terms of capitulation, was allowed to return to my home with my side arms and cavalry horse and equippage ; thus pa rolled I was treated with magnanimous courtesy. Likewise cao thousands of my com rades from the noble Lee down to the lowest io rank proclaim the virtues of a generous foe. Times have changed, and with them new duties and condi tious confront us Instead of an in ternecioe war with kith and kin our foe, we are confronted almost at our own doors by a treacherous, un pr in cipled, though stubborn, dauntless enemy. If this little war cloud hung over oar Canadian border instead of our coast line, I might not join the cry of "to arms " But now what is ocr duty ? When the United States went to war with Old Mexico ic 1847 a few pr omi neut leaders in the North counselled "bands off,*' declaring it was a Southern fight The coose quence was that 40,000 Southern sol diere joined by only 20.0W Northern soldiers whipped the Mexicans and thereby added 170,000 square miles to Southern territory, and from that day to this Southern principles have prevailed in Texas unanimously Apropos, Mr Editor, I regret to say I read io the Colombia Daily State of February 28, reprinted io the Daily Item, an ioterview from Geo. Wade Hampton io which be uses this language "I would advise the men of the Sooth to stay at home and let the North furnish the troops.*; A s great ao admirer as I am .of Geo Hampton, especially Of his record io peace aod war, recognizing io him the qualities of a superb leader, yet I cao bat express my utter astonish meat *?t this unwise, untimely and in? discreet advice. What would be tbe consequence v of such Southern apathy? 1st The Sooth could have DO share io the spoils of victory. 2d The finger of scorn would be jnstly pointed io oar faces by ail the world as stupid cowards 3d. We would go down io history as having, as a people, been so com? pletely whipped io the late "rebel lion" that the old Confederate sol diere are too old to fight and the yoong generation of rootberners are fit only as midnight assassin*, white cappers and negro lynchera 4tb The yoaog men of the Sooth, it would be charged, being devoid of chivalry, heed the counsel of the old disappoicted, disgruntled and soper anuated leaders, who counsel "banda off" This being prima facea true, pro vided Hampton's advice prevails, can any Sootbern man feel that he has a merited right to make his home in Coba ? Gen. Hampton weald have os "hands off*' until the enemy euter our very gateway-our seaports. Far better would it be for the South that we should make it a Southern fight with Northern capital and Fed era! ships, and the first Bag that is perched in victory upon the soil of Cuba shall be by a native of the South a Southern soldier ! I say we should be proud of the military strength and spirit of the Southern States Adjutant General Watts in his last report to the gov ernmeot says Sooth Carolina heads the list with 3,743 well equpped and actually enlisted men in service now ready and subject to orders The en? tire number of men liable to duty in South Carolina is 177,800, while in the cavalry service South Carolina head? the list of ail the States with 1,200, this being nearly four times as many SB any other State in the Union Theu next to South Carolina stands Texas Tb? totel number of men liable for duty in the Union ie 10,139.788 War gives not only these men active work bat it serves in a great meas ure to shake off the lethargy of a large portion of the non-producing elements in this country who are clamoring for'something to do, giv ing them not only breastworks and fortifications to build, but railroads, bridge? and internal improvements generally Wheia we remember that a war with Spain cannot be a war of inva siou, but entirely a naval conflict and that the uses to which our soldiers and fatigue service will be confined to our own fortifications and the up? building aad strengthening of our own coast States, what pretext have we in discouraging a ready response to the call "to arms." No, Gen. Hampton, recall those words. Rather tell the young men of the South, their motto should be : He who dallies is a dastard He wlho doubts is damned ! S G. S The Way to Fight lt. The Baptist Courier says : "It has come to our editorial ear that Bro C C ?rown is possessed of a more or less developed intention of writing a tract on Mormonism We believe that such a tract will do good, and that Dr. Brown would do the work admirably" The seed of such a tract has its basis cot in any probability of any intelligent Baptist being misled into] believing the Latter Day saint errors It is reported that tbere are forty Mormon elders now operatipg in South Carolina. They claim more than a thousand adherents and twen ty-five Sunday schools In view of these facts it is desirable for our peo? ple to be well posted as to the per? nicious claims of these er rori st?, that they be able to save the weak broth? er from stumbling It is because of the presence of these Mormon elders in the Stite that the Courier is now running a series of editorials on Mor? monism 91 Believed to be Grazy.
