WEDNESDAY, NOV. 25, 1896. GUV AN ALIEN. Lamentations From St. Charles. St Charles, Sal-umter County, Nov. 17, 1896, 10 m.?"0, where is my boy to night."?Hez. 4-14. Where are we, where areali of us to-night. The votes are cast. The election is over. The wires have just ticked, "Darlington for the oew county." Bat we hope the blasted wire is a naked bare foot lire. Then there is Smithville (old Sor" j Hill) to hear from yet and tbe Ker sbaw precincts and Mantille and we are "waiting and watching" end hoping too that our allegiance acd-fealty are still due to tbe old Game Cock County. Indeed, no linee can weaken our loyalty to old Sumte?. They shant make a foreigner, an alien oat of us if we have to hitch up "Brock" to the buggy and haul our grip aud cup and saucer over tbe Hues. Salem may not miss us aod Sumter may not appreciate tbe acquisition and meet us aod greet us with an ovation, but we sball feel lees like a "Pilgrim or Strang er," and more reconciled to our environ ments. We are opposed to tbe new county also to tbe new woman and to oew shoes; but neither the new woman or oew shoes are bothering us to-nigbt, bot we are greatly worried where we are going to sleep, in a foreign land, a brand-new county, or no? A rich county too, a powerful rich county. Good ness-gracious-sakes-al ive we didn't know, until a few hours since, bow immense ly valuable our lands really were, $1000,00 per acre, $500,00 per acre, $170 per acre, Jebosaphat ! We hope and trust they don't propose to make bricks out of tbat kind of dirt unless as a "medium of exchange," Why darn free silver when we've got acres of such dirt as that Now we don't think these lands ought to depreciate in value more than a; the average ratio of $5.00 per mile from the county seat; in which case our own plan tation dhould bring any where from $150 to $950 per acre according to location of coun ty seat, (Please don't give Diggs Wilder any bint of above valuation) Bat we are offering choice lots at aod below co9'?we mean be low tbe-e figures, very far below. Indeed, we'll take $100 less, in the one instan ce and $900 less per acre in tbe other. This, pro vided tbe oew county is un fait accompli to night. Bqi if the blessed "Nos have it," aod this Salem county is again 4 y ?ars in tbe un known future, then and in that case we im immediately move tbat new county Hoes be drawn, within which Gregg's X roads shall be the center and county seat, in which case we hereby donate ? of our plantation, con sisting of 40 acres aod a mule, more or less, soil aod subsoil, (the latter will aoswer ad mirably for brick) with about 2J feet of good and valid mortgage covering tbe whole very uniformly and closely, provided tbe court bouse and jail are erected thereon?we mean on tbe land, not on the mortgage. Heavens, no, it couldn't stand another Court House. The poor bouse is already erected and we are occupying it, but wilt donate tbat also, provided we are retained as ao oc cupant. We also subscribe $500,000 in bonds. These are Confederate bonds aod their great advantage is tbat no one will ever be taxed for their payment. We also donate clay sufficient to mould 200,000,000 bricks and mortar. Water is handy and we have two shovels and a spade which we will cheer fully lend to the county above described, all of which we will submit to our friend the Clerk of Court to certify to as "good and valid" when tbe time arises. Now if Dial's Bay or Bull's Bay or Pamlico Sound or any other Bay or Sound will make any better bid than this we shall cheerfully, and without protestor contest, vote to have the county seat deposited therein. Guv. Nov 18, 10 p. m ?O, where is my land to-nivbt ! and boards, and bricks and all my little tricks, &c , &c. Onr rest last night was mnch disturbed by dreams of :ar off lands and lines and boundaries. We seemed to try to stay at home, in Sumter County, but some dratted power kept pushing us out and into a foreign land, ur.til toward morn iog, we just literally kicked clean out of tbe traces, collar aod hames, and overslept our selt until too late to mali this important lucubration And now we're much in the same fix as Btshopviile?she's woo the county seat with no county to sit in it and don't know what to do with it. We'll risk the waste basket and a state of innocuous de&ue tude, and Bisbopviile might as well. Wonder what sort of er kind of er anom alous valuation attaches to these high bred lands to-night. Long says, "Wisacky dirt has swunk upwards er $100 an acre secce las' night and Bisbopviile is sowio' oais mighty heavy on tbe court house square aod j*il lot cause tbey think they kin make a crop er oats before this here contess and potess will be decided. Cause if frauds in one frauda in all and eff tbevs gwine to make me vote any nothar time I'm gwine to vote no agin everything and vote my boys and my sisters boys, and everybody, eise I kin, and bury Jak?" Parrott's county deepr'n Lazarus aod spen 1 more Christmas in Sumter fore we all goes tcvDial's Bay." Now in justice to friend Parrott we would say, tbat we admire bis indomitable pluck and energy, bis patience and perseverance We know that tbe ultima thule of his hopes and aspirations was the new county of Salem with Bisbopviile as the county seat, &c. But the people have expreesed themselves through and by their ballots, whether short or long or scratched, and any ipso dixit issued io this matter will be met with the prcof tbat we can speak louder and more emphatic Guv. Tbe tbree-year-old boy of J A, Johnson, of Lynn Center, 111, is subject to attacks of croup. Mr. Johnson says he is satisfied tbat the timely use of Chamberlain's Cough Reme dy, during a severe attack, saved hi3 little boy's life. He is in tbe drug business, a member of tbe firm of Johnson Bro3. of tbat place: and tbey bandied a great many patent medicines for throat and lung diseases. He bad all these to choose from, and skilled physicians ready to respond to bis call, but selected this remedy for use in bis owe fami ly at a time when bis child's life was in dan ger, because be knew it to be superior to any other, and famous tbe country over for its cures of croup. Mr. Johnson says tbi3 is the best selliug cough mediciue tbey bandle, od tbat it gives splendid satisfaction io all ca es. Sold by Dr. ?. J. China FIRST NATIONAL BAM/ OP SUMTER.
