Tbe Watchman and Southron now has the combined circulation and influence of both of tbe cid papers, and is mani festly the best advertising medium in Ssmter. * The returns received Ust night ap pear to establish beyond doubt that McKinley will be tbe next President of the United States. It must be remem bered, however, tbat tbe major portion of the retaros emanate from Republi cans sources and allowance must be made for tbe extravagant claims tbey are wont to make on election night, whether victory or defeat bas been their lot. We are willing to concede tbe election of McKinley on the strength of tbe returns already in, bnt we do not believe his strength in the Electoral College will reach 800 votes. The latest report received was bulle tined at 4 a. m , and this stated that conservative Republicans claimed only 251 electoral votes for McKinley. Hanna Rules the Roost ! The Returns Very Incom plete, But Sufficient Have Been Received to LEAVE NOt DOUBT OF THE TRIUMPH OP THE MONEY POWER. ? ? ^Republicans have swept tbe central west aod carried McKinley to victory. The great States that were doubtful have all fallen into their columns. Il linois, Indiana. Kentucky, Wisconsin, Iowa, cast the?r vc:es for tbe gold stand ard advocate by estimated pluralities ranging froto 9,500 io Keotuck) to 100,? 000 io Illinois aod Iowa Nebraska, North Dakota, North Carolina and Michigan appear to be the only uncer tain States to have gone for Bryan, with Tennessee still in doubt, and Maryland lost to Democracy. The Republican vote io New York exceeded ? the claims of the party managers, and despite their majority io tke city btihg held down to 21,000 by Tamii any, reach the tremendous total of 284, 000 for tbe State. chairman jones claims that bryan is elected. Chicago, Nov. 3 ?Chairman Jones, shortly before midnight, gaie ont the following: "We have received no unfavorable reports from any State we bave claim ed except Kentucky. We can afford to lose Kentucky aod still have enough electoral votes to win. "There is no foundation for tbe claims of the Republicans. There is at this time no reason to tbink that any one of the States claimed by me for Bryan has failed to vote for bkn. While misleading reports are being sent in all directions, private advices assure us that each one of these States has gone for Mr. Bryan. For two hours, the most extravagant claims as to Ken tucky and Indiana have been telegraph ei all over the country, while within tbe last few minutes our committees as sure us that both States are safe for us, Mr. Bryan is certainly elected." To this was added by Mr. E, W, Barrelt of the literary bureau: "We bave jast received a message j from tbe chairman of ifaa State central I ' committee of Indiana to the effect that i Iodiaua is absolutely 8 a for Bryan." j Alien W. CfarK, secretary of tbe State committee of Indiana, telephoned: 'Sixty five Indianapolis precincts beard from show an average Republican gain of 11 toa precinct. Fifteen country precincte beard from &how a Demo ! oratic gain of about 40 to each precinct. I believe tbe Democrats bave carried tbe State I do not expect returns from country districts until late." kentucky. Louisville. Columbus, , Nov. 3.?The retur?s so far received iodicate that the Repub lican plurality in Ohio will be slightly jo fx ce ss of that given icr Bashneli for governor last year. That was 91,000. Raleigh, N. C, N)v. 3.?Returns up to 2 o'clock are considered as ?odi cations that Bryan carries the State by 10.000. Yet the lipubiicaos do not abate their claims for MeKioley. New County Names. It is important that the discussion of the names of the proposed new counties shall continue. These names should be significant and cuphooiouH Objec tion bas been raised to the name Lime stone, and we think a better jne might be selected. We suggest a revival of / tbe once familiar uanie of Piockney, lo 1791 all tbit part of South Carolina . embracing York, Cfccs'er, Spartanburg c and Uoion was erected into a distrior * called Piockney For many years this Piockney district was a separate con- * gressiooal district and an equity dis- * trict Later on the name was dropped, c and those ??f existing disttic's reta?Lcd. t? It would b .jui?e appropriate to give ' the oame u? the new c unty to be erect cd from porti one or* this old district Tbe name.of Piockney was one of the t most famous in tbe ?arly history of the j r State Charles Coteewnrtb Piockney I r was one of the ecvoys-to France, when be J ^ declared "Millions for defence, but not one cent for trib''-*e.y He was tbe Fed eral candidate for Vice President in { 1800, and bad he abandoned Adams, would have been elected. He wa- , twice afterwards the Fede;al candidate ? for President. Later on. he was m^de a m&jor-geoeral in the Uuited States army. His brother Thomas was minis ter to Spain, a ca: didate for the Presi ' dency in 17P6, being beaten by Adams and Jefferson and a congressman. These two brothers were five times on the Presidential ticket of the Federal party. Charles Piuckcey their cousin, who led the Jefferson forcrs iu South Carolina against his cousin and defeat ed him, was the most popular man who bas ever lived in the State. He held every < fuee of honor in tbe State and Union to which he aspired and had much to do with the framing ofthecon stiiution of the Uuited Slates. Surely, such a family aod stub a graod old dis trict are worthy of remembrance While the Dame Salem doe3 Dot meet the favor of some it is hoary with age. Salem county was formed in 1791 and continued to have a place on the map of South Carolina uotil ' ot long before tbe war. It was as important as Clare moot acd Clarendon, tbe other coun ties comprising Somrer district. It has never ceased locally to bave signifi cance. For tbe new county about Green wood, we should prefer some other oame Let us bave Ninety-Six: again That was a great old district in the times that tried meu'd soula. Tbe oame Cambridge, though not so sigoifi cant, would be acceptable. Or if it be desired to honor some great man, let us remember that Cheves and McDuf fie. as well as Calboun, were ornaments of Abbeville county. While we are speaking of counties it is not out of the way to consider the names of the county seats It may not be generally koowD in South Carolina that tbe practice cf naming tbe cour? house after she county is cooSued ?lmost entirety to this State. This, j however, we think, is a good custom, | and may well be continued.?Columbia ; Evening News. Lafe Pence maie a grout speech in | Chicago.
